Hawks Bounce Back to Split Series With South Milwaukee

The Greenfield baseball team won its seventh game in 11 tries.

One day after , the Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks bounced back nicely with a come-from-behind, 10-5 victory at South Milwaukee in a Woodland Conference baseball showdown Tuesday.

Greenfield (7-4 overall, 3-1 conference) trailed, 4-2, after five innings, but broke through for a big sixth inning.

The Hawks loaded the bases on an error and two singles and scored runs on RBI singles from Tylaer Laverdure and Peter Eidsmoe. Matt Brokob then snapped the 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Greenfield pitcher Nate Rios got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth. After surrendering a leadoff double, he retired the next three batters in order, including a strikeout out South Milwaukee’s leadoff hitter to end the threat.

In the next half inning, the Hawks added five insurance runs as Korben Biersack, Nick Jablonski and Laverdure all drove in runs with hits.

“We needed this game,” Greenfield coach Lee Kleszczynski said. “And we needed to bring a lot of energy. Down, 4-1, (before) the fifth (inning), our players did not panic. We stayed focused and made the most of our opportunities.”

Up next for the Hawks is a league game at New Berlin West at 5 p.m. Thursday.
