High School Sports Preview: Swimming Sectionals, Wrestling Regionals are Saturday

PantherHawks swim team vying for sectional title.

The Greenfield/Greendale co-op swim team will take its first step toward competing for the WIAA Division 1 State Meet championship when it hosts the WIAA sectional on Saturday.

The 11-team meet begins at 2 p.m.; diving was Friday evening.

The Woodland Conference champion , who were third in the state meet a year ago after taking 10th in 2009, are considered the sectional favorites by their coach Dale Schrank.

The winners of each event qualify for the state meet. Also qualifying are the next 18-best times/scores in each event from sectionals statewide.

Teams joining the hosts are the Badger/Big Foot/Westosha Central/Wilmot Union conglomerate, the Burlington/Catholic Central/East Troy/Union Grove/Waterford co-op, Franklin, Kenosha Bradford, Kenosha Tremper, Oak Creek, South Milwaukee and the three Racine public schools: Case, Horlick and Park.

Whitnall swimming

The Falcons will be in the WIAA Division 2 Cudahy Sectional at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The winners of each event qualify for the state meet, as do the next 12-best times/scores in each event from sectionals statewide.

Shorewood and Whitefish Bay are the favorites to win the sectional. Also in the 11-team field are Brookfield Academy, Cudahy, Delavan-Darien, Elkhorn, Martin Luther, Pius XI, St. Thomas More/St. Francis and Whitewater.

Greenfield, Whitnall wrestling

The Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks and Whitnall Falcons will be squaring off with six other teams in the Racine Case Regional at 9:30 a.m.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the sectional, to be held at Greenfield at 10 a.m. Feb. 19.

Also competing in the regional will be Franklin, Greendale/St. Thomas More, Milwaukee Hamilton, Racine Case, Racine Horlick and Racine Park.
