Whitnall Softball Team Takes a Shot at First Place This Afternoon

The Falcons are one game behind New Berlin Eisenhower, which visits at 4:15 p.m.

With just a few short weeks remaining in the regular season, the Whitnall softball team finds itself in an envious position.

The Falcons (9-2) host New Berlin Eisenhower (10-1) at afternoon with a share of first place on the line.

“It is always exciting to be in position to play for first place for your conference and I am proud of the way our team has played to be in this position,” Whitnall coach Gary Caliva said.

The Falcons put themselves in the thick of the Woodland Conference title hunt when they defeated crosstown rival Greenfield, 1-0, at home May 6, as reported by John Rech of NOW Newspapers.

The Falcons followed that victory with a narrow, 5-4 win over Greendale four days later, but the win over perennial conference contender Greenfield was a test Whitnall passed with flying colors.

“The win against Greenfield confirmed the fact that our team could compete with the best teams in our conference,” Caliva said.

Eisenhower began the season with a 7-4 loss to Greendale but has since won 10 consecutive league games and holds a one-game lead over the second-place Falcons.

Included in that 10-game winning streak was a 10-0 victory over Whitnall just one week ago. So how do the Falcons avenge a loss to the first-place Lions after getting just three hits and committing four errors against them May 5?

“For us to compete with Ike, we have to play better in all aspects of the game: better defense, better hitting and better pitching,” Caliva said. “The last two games against Greenfield and Greendale we did that and our kids have given themselves a chance to play for first place and all you can ask for is that chance.”
