WIAA Track Postseason Begins Today

Greenfield, Whitnall will compete in separate regional meets.

Greenfield and Whitnall athletes will attempt to move one step closer to the season-ending WIAA State Track and Field Meet next week when they take on some of the area's best at WIAA regional meets Monday.

The Whitnall boys and girls will square off with athletes from Mukwonago, Muskego, Pius XI, Racine Case, Racine Horlick, Racine Park, Union Grove and Wisconsin Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The Greenfield quads will be at the South Milwaukee regional and will face athletes from Cudahy, Franklin, Greendale, Bay View/Lifelong Learning, Milwaukee Hamilton, Milwaukee Pulaski, Oak Creek and the host school. That meet begins at 3 p.m.

The first four finishers in each event at either regional advance to the Mukwonago Sectional at 4 p.m. Thursday. The first three finishers in each event at the sectional automatically qualify for the state meet, as do individuals and relay teams whose performances in sectionals rank among the eight best of all sectionals, including the first three finishers in Division 1.

Here are five Greenfield/Whitnall athletes to keep an eye on:

  • Michelle Garner: The Greenfield junior is the defending state champion in the 300-meter hurdles, owns the state's best time in the 300s this spring. She also has one of just 17 sub-1-minute times in the 400.
  • Rachel Stave: The Whitnall sophomore has the 15th-best Division 1 triple jump in the state this spring and won the Woodland Conference title in that event last week, in addition to the 400.
  • Mary Erickson: Erickson, a Whitnall senior, own's this season's 14th-best time in the state in the 1,600 and the 16th-best time in the 800. She won two conference titles last week.
  • Arnell Howard: A Greenfield senior, Howard could be a force in the sprints, along with sophomore teammate Reggie Blakely.
  • Eric Windt: The Falcons senior won the 3,200 at the conference meet, Whitnall's only event win at the meet.
