Woodland Conference Softball Title Likely Decided by Greenfield, Whitnall Match-ups

The two local teams, both among the Woodland Conference East Division leaders, play each other Monday and Tuesday during the final week of the regular season.

Back-to-back showdowns between crosstown rivals Whitnall and Greenfield will go a long way in determining this year’s Woodland Conference East softball champion.

The Falcons, who entered this week tied for first place at 7-1 in league play (11-5 overall), host the Hustlin’ Hawks at 4 p.m. Monday before playing the Hawks again at 4:30 p.m. at Konkel Park on Tuesday.

South Milwaukee (8-2) is tied for first with the Falcons; Greenfield (6-2) is one game behind the leaders with fourth-place Cudahy (5-3) lurking as well.

“Greenfield is having an excellent season this year and these games will directly impact the conference title race,” Whitnall coach Tom Hickman said in an email to Patch.

In addition to the showdown with the Hawks, the Falcons also take on the Cudahy Packers twice on Friday to make up a postponed doubleheader from last week. The last time the teams met, the Packers ended the Falcons’ season with a 12-5 sectional win.

Greenfield, meanwhile, has a doubleheader to make up with struggling Shorewood.

Whitnall set up the important championship week with five wins in six tries last week, including a 4-0 effort against Woodland Conference teams.

In a doubleheader sweep of Brown Deer, 22-0 and 15-0, on May 8, Lizzy Menden went a combined 4-for-6 with seven runs scored and a home run, Liz Thon was 5-for-6 with four runs and six RBI and Alex Cimler was 3-for-5 with six runs and four RBI.

Whitnall also split two games in the Muskego Slugfest Tournament on Saturday, beating Kenosha Tremper, 9-8, in nine innings after losing to the host school, 11-10.

While the conference title is on the local teams’ minds, the WIAA postseason is right around the corner as well. On Thursday, the sixth-seeded Falcons visit third-seeded New Berlin West in a rematch of last year's Division 2 second-round playoff action.

Greenfield’s first-round Division 1 opponent and seed was not known at the time of publication.
