Greenfield Farmers Market Could Double in Size by Labor Day

A vendor waiting list, large crowds and mature grass could all factor into the Greenfield Farmers Market expanding in a few weeks.

The Greenfield Farmers Market has been such a success since opening in June, it could double in size by Labor Day.

Mayor Michael Neitzke said the first few markets consistently have had about 20 or more vendors lined along the outside of a new walking path at Konkel Park made thanks to a donation from Dan Jansen Family Fest.

Once the grass planted inside the path is mature enough, the market will have space for 20-30 more vendors, according to Neitzke.

“There was a lot of wait and see from a lot of vendors and after the tremendous turnouts the first few weeks, the vendors started lining up,” he said. “Now we have a waiting list.”

Neitzke said he anticipates the new grass to be ready for the wear and tear of a market around Labor Day, when more and more local produce is typically available.

The city has been blessed with beautiful weather every Sunday since the market opened, and Neitzke said vendors have taken notice of its success.

“Vendors are almost uniformly saying, and you can ask them, that it’s one of the most easy to use, easy to access places around,” Neitzke said. “The crowds have been great. And I think it’s going to be successful for a long time, and as the resources come along, it will get better and better. I’m very proud of the whole thing.”

Neitzke said he’d like the area used for other events. The improvements made will no doubt help Dan Jansen Fest organizers during its annual Memorial Day festivities, but he envisions art shows or car shows taking place there as well.

He said in the future, he’d like the area to have shade in the form of a shelter or similar structure, and mentioned the space is a prime candidate for a seasonal, temporary amphitheater for concerts or performances.

The Greenfield Farmers Market is weekly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
