Two Whitnall Middle School Students Win VFW Essay Contest

Kayla Okus and Vicky Stockinger both earned first place in local VFW competitions and have qualified for the next round.

A pair of Whitnall Middle School students were chosen as winners in the local round of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.

Kayla Okus (pictured) turned in the first-place essay for VFW Post 12100, while Vicky Stockinger’s essay was picked as the winner for Post 6498.

The students, who submitted their work through teacher Scott Siemers' seventh-hour class, wrote essays entitled, "What Does Patriotism Mean To Me?" Kayla’s winning entry was awarded $100.

Both students advanced to the regional round of the competition.
