Whitnall Students to Welcome Artist in Residence in April

Students at Edgerton Elementary School will have the unique opportunity to work with artist Michelle Stitzlein, during the school’s artist in residence program April 14-16.

The Ohio-based Stitzlein will give an all-school presentation about her work, which centers around making artwork with recycled materials. Then, each class will have an opportunity to work with Stitzlein on a school mural made with bottle caps and plastic lids, that will hang in the school’s hallway upon completion. The mural’s theme is “Nature, Environment, Growing.”

Stitzlein will help students with the cap selection process and with drilling bottle caps onto a plywood mural. The caps will add the color to sketches Edgerton students have been creating in art teacher Hailey Dulde’s classes.

Stitzlein has been creating her sculptures and murals with recycled materials full-time since 2000 in her Baltimore, OH, studio. Her work has been shown in art and craft museums around the country, and she has visited more than 50 elementary schools and organizations to share her passion for creating.

Edgerton students have been collecting caps and lids to be used during Stitzlein’s visit since January, sorting them by color and size.
