Watch Where You Place Your Political Sign

Political signs along right of way are illegal, potentially dangerous, and will be removed.

With a major recall election set for June 5, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is reminding citizens that state law prohibits the placement of any type of sign – including political, commercial or garage sale signs – on state highway right of way.  "We certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from participating in elections, but signs within highway right of way are a public safety concern," said Deb Brucaya with WisDOT’s Bureau of Highway Maintenance, in a news release. "Improperly placed campaign signs can distract motorists or obstruct their view, especially at intersections. And when people enter an intersection or highway right of way to install a sign, they’re putting their own safety at risk, as well as risking …

DOT Secretary: Buckle Up, Save Lives

To increase safety belt use, law enforcement officers throughout Wisconsin will be patrolling city streets, rural roads, and major highways—day and night—during the Click It or Ticket mobilization from May 21 to June 3.

Editor's Note: The following Letter to the Editor was provided to Patch via Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb. Dear Editor, Traffic deaths in Wisconsin so far this year have increased compared with the same time last year. Tragically, in all too many of these recent deadly crashes, the drivers and passengers may have survived if they had been buckled up. It is a proven fact that wearing a safety belt will effectively protect you from being ejected from a vehicle or thrown around violently inside during a crash and possibly hitting another vehicle occupant with massive force. Wearing a safety belt at all times is common sense, so it’s hard to understand why approximately one out of five motorists in our state …

Man Charged After Stealing, Pawing Aunt's Jewelry

Suspect allegedly stole his aunt's necklace when she took him to a doctor's appointment and stopped for gas.

A 24-year-old Greenfield man is facing charges after he was caught pawning jewelry owned by his aunt and her mother. Daniel F. Tuchalski was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Friday with one count of theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: A Greenfield police officer on patrol Tuesday went to Robert Haack Diamonds to look for suspicious transactions where he discovered Tuchalski had come in May 10 and pawned two necklaces and a ring. He told store staff the items belong to his grandmother who had passed away. The officer then took pictures of the items to Tuchalski’s aunt’s home in the 5000 block of West Colonial Court where she said the items belong to…

May 20 Eclipse Could be Eclipsed by Clouds

Sky watchers could see a partial eclipse as Sunday draws to a close, but only if incoming rain and clouds can hold off until after sunset.

A solar eclipse is always a spectacular site, even if it's not a full eclipse, and Wisconsin will have a chance to witness it as the sun sets on Sunday. We will see about 50 minutes of a cosmic disappearing act – a partial solar eclipse – before the sun drops below the horizon at sunset (8:14 p.m.)  However, should the forecast bear to be accurate, it may be the clouds that get in the way of the sun, and not the moon, that prevents us from seeing it.  Locally, the Milwaukee Public Museum’s Daniel M. Soref Planetarium director Bob Bonadurer will be at the Urban Ecology Center observation tower for a viewing through special planetarium telescopes. Check out this video for skywatching tips. According to an article from Yahoo!News, the eclipse…
