Whitnall Teacher Pushes Students Beyond Classroom

Laura Cerletty, a science teacher at Whitnall High School, worked closely with a software and technology company in Oregon to create an anatomy lab designed for high school students.

At first glance, there is nothing out of the ordinary about Laura Cerletty’s Anatomy and Physiology class. Some of her Whitnall High School students squirm when told how to crack the lab rat's jaw with a scissors, and others perk up when Cerletty told them a student in the previous class had a rat intestine more than 100 centimeters long. The dissection and studying of rats helps students better understand how their own bodies work, but lately, Cerletty’s students are doing more than just memorizing muscles, bones and organs. “I don’t think the kids realized what they’ve done,” Cerletty said. This spring, Cerletty’s classes wrote a new blood pressure-measuring lab — step-by-step instructions meant to test and expand students' knowledge …

Whitnall Fundraiser for Allyssa Olson a Success

The school's student senate raised $1,600 by Friday morning for classmate Allyssa Olson, whose mother and brother were killed in separate car accidents in West Allis last month.

They wore them backwards, forwards and sideways. They all wore them for Allyssa Olson. Students, teachers and administrators at Whitnall High School participated in a fundraiser for their classmate-in-need, paying a “fee” to wear a hat during school hours Friday. The asking rate for the privilege to wear the hat and a blue ribbon pin was $2, but many gave much more for Olson, whose mother and brother were killed in separate car accidents in West Allis on April 29. “We’ve been amazed with how much money people have donated, how supportive people have been of her during this terrible time,” said senior Erika Eykmans, the school’s Student Senate secretary. “People have come in with a $20 bill and said keep the change, give it to her, she …

West Allis Fatal Car Accidents Hit Close to Home at Whitnall High School

The school is holding a fundraiser for junior Allyssa Olson, whose mother and brother were killed in separate accidents April 29. Students can pay $2 to wear a hat during the school day, a tribute to Olson's late brother.

Students, teachers and administrators at Whitnall High School, are trying to bring some relief to one of their own who is coping with unimaginable circumstances. Allyssa Olson, a Whitnall junior, tragically lost her mother and brother in separate car accidents in West Allis on April 29. Her mother, Mary Jane Moore, was run over and killed by a car while she was lying in the street. Earlier this week, it was reported that Moore might have been struck by another car minutes before being run over. A few hours later, Olson’s 22-year-old brother Thomas Olson was killed when the vehicle he was in, that was en route to the hospital so he could be with his mother, flipped and wrecked. The driver, Xavier Hughes, 21, had a blood alcohol content of 0…

Whitnall Could be Heard Loud, Clear Through New Sound System

Athletic Director Rick Elertson said the high school gym's sound system needs to be replaced and he hopes to have a new one by the school's June 3 commencement ceremony.

First-year Whitnall High School Athletic Director Rick Elertson remembers being introduced to the school gymnasium’s sound system last fall. It was an introduction that left a bad taste in his mouth. “I immediately recognized we weren’t going to have a good relationship,” Elertson quipped during a Whitnall School Board meeting Monday. The system is no longer audible when the volume is turned up too high, and at times during the 2011-12 winter season, the school contracted with a DJ to bring in a sound system for half-time shows and public address announcements. Elertson said the current system is an antique and needs to be replaced. “It’s not functional anymore,” he said. “That’s where we’re at.” Elertson combed through his budget, and …

Whitnall Calendar Saga Comes to Conclusion

The School Board unanimously passed an amendment put forth by Board member TJ Anderson that incorporates early release and late start times for the three school levels.

While slowly putting both fists up in the air and quietly saying, “Yes,” Whitnall School Board member TJ Anderson let out what could have been considered a collective sigh of relief. Two weeks after learning the results of a district-wide survey that polled parents on their preferences, Anderson’s amendment put an end of 4 ½ months of back and forth deliberation and hours of conversations. The amendment passed unanimously on Monday night.  The amendment aligned all the collaborative times on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, with the following impact on each grade level. “Yes, we know what the survey results are, but the key to this is the principals and administrators,” Anderson said. “Each principal laid out what they wanted…
