State Eyes 2015 For 27th Street Reconstruction South of Greenfield

Lanes will be widened, median openings adjusted and intersections reconstructed between College and Drexel avenues.

The state Department of Transportation says it's hoping that reconstruction of 27th Street between Drexel and College avenues, just south of Greenfield, can begin in two years. Plans call for the lanes to be widened to 12 feet, with a 5-foot shoulder created to accommodate bicycles. Several median openings will be moved, closed or modified, project manager Tony Lazcano said. Intersections will also be widened and include new signals. Some real estate issues still need to be resolved, including negotiations to relocate four buildings, which could impact the start of construction, Lazcano said. "But right now we're working toward a 2015 construction," Lazcano said. At one point it appeared work would be delayed to 2017, which prompted a …

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle While Crossing 27th Street

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, but was in good enough condition to speak with the investigating officer.

UPDATED: 2:50 p.m. Oct. 1 Greenfield police are investigating an incident involving a pedestrian getting struck by a vehicle while crossing 27th Street near the I-894 on-ramps. The incident happened just before 11:40 a.m. According to Capt. Michael Brunner, a 19-year-old male was riding a skateboard north on the sidewalk approaching the intersection of the off-ramp. A 28-year-old female driving a vehicle began to make a right turn to go south on South 27th Street and did not see the pedestrian when he entered the intersection in the crosswalk. The vehicle hit the pedestrian, who was transported to Froedtert by ambulance. The pedestrian suffered a broken leg. The incident is still under investigation to determine the conditions of the …

27th Street On-Ramps Causing Confusion Among Motorists

Changes that were part of the Mitchell Interchange project have drivers making illegal U-turns or using a small neighborhood street to correct their mistake of missing the ramps.

If you've missed the on-ramps for I-894 or I-43 while heading in either direction on 27th Street, you're not alone. Since the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reconstructed the ramps, motorists have been confused, and that confusion is leading to dangerous, illegal U-turns and congestion in a small neighborhood just off 27th Street. Motorists can now head either east or west from either side of 27th Street, but many are missing the ramps (see video) and try to correct their mistake by heading north on 27th and executing an illegal U-turn in the median break at Bottsford Avenue. If the motorist doesn't do the U-turn, he or she likely turns west onto Bottsford and does a Y-turn in the street, or even pulls into one of the residential …

These on ramps have been in place for a while now and I do use them on a daily basis. Although this information is important for new users on the ramps, as it was indeed confusing when they were first constructed. The illegal U-turn you talked about is dangerous but i feel that drivers have to go through a lot more trouble not making that U-turn.   more ›

27th Street Revitalization Starts with Grand Opening of Historic Route US 41

The stretch of roadway was celebrated with a grand opening Thursday morning.

With the joint hope that the 27th Street corridor’s popularity takes off like a 1969 Chevelle off the starting line, City of Milwaukee and Greenfield officials declared Historic Route US 41 open for business Thursday. In a grand opening event attended by officials of both municipalities, business leaders and others, many praised the cooperation between the cities and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to revitalize the stretch of a highway that runs from Michigan all the way down to Florida. “This is an example of when you have good people working together trying to get something done positive for the community,” Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke said. “I think you’ll see more development along our stretch, and we hope that Oak …

New Design Elements Along 27th Street Welcome Motorists

Banners, signs and planters all part of the Mitchell Interchange project.

A sense of renewal along the 27th Street corridor is now visually evident with the erection of dozens of banner signs along the state roadway.  The rows of the green flag banners, featuring a Highway 41 stamp emblem and a blue diamond design, are part of an effort to revitalize the business corridor that runs through both the City of Milwaukee and Greenfield. In addition to the banners, community-sensitive design elements have been placed in the 27th Street median, including street signs, planters and signage pointing motorists to some of the popular destinations along the thoroughfare.  "Basically, on all of WisDOT projects, they include a budget for community sensitive design," Wisconsin Department of Transportation spokesperson Laura …
