State Wrestling Update: Greenfield's Season Ends; Bourgeois in Semis Tonight

GHS's Wirtz, Krueger lose consolation matches Friday as Keith Morin's coaching career ends. Whitnall's Kameron Bourgeois wrestles Friday evening.

Greenfield seniors Andrew Krueger and Taylor Wirtz had their seasons come to an end Friday short of the medal stand at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. After losing his first tournament match Thursday afternoon, Krueger defeated DeForest junior Jack Jenkins, 7-3, in a 140-pound wrestleback match Friday morning. Needing one more win to assure himself a spot in the top six, however, Krueger fell to D.C. Everest senior Josh Dupuis, 8-5, the final match coached by longtime Greenfield coach Keith Morin. Krueger finished his season with a 37-6 record and 102 career victories, the eighth-most in school history. Wirtz, who lost his opening round match at 130 pounds Thursday afternoon, was pinned by …

Greenfield Wrestling Coach Hanging it Up After 38 Years Coaching

State tournament is final chapter in Keith Morin's storied coaching career.

Even though he’s been at it for 46 years, Keith Morin still has a passion for wrestling. You can hear it in his voice, and you can see it in his eyes when he’s giving one of his pupils instruction, tips of knowledge he’s stockpiled from nearly five decades in the sport. But this weekend’s WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison, marks the end of Morin’s storied career. After 38 years of coaching, the last nine of which were spent as head of the Greenfield High School varsity program, Morin is retiring. “I’m 60 years old now,” Morin said. “This job, people don’t realize how demanding coaching is. Not only physically, but there’s a lot of mental too it. You …

Wow, I remember coach Morin very well. He was my wrestling coach and health teacher in Middle School from 97-99. I was a terrible student then and that kept me on the bench for most wrestling meets, but he was one of the few men who actually encouraged me during that time when I didn't have a father around. I'm grateful to God for his service and I'll always have fond memories of him.   more ›

State Wrestling Tournament, Hoops League Title Game Highlight This Week's Events

Three local wrestlers will be competing in this weekend's state tournament in Madison and the Whitnall boys basketball team is shooting for a share of the conference title.

A busy week could be an exciting one for Whitnall and Greenfield high school sports. Three local wrestlers will be competing in the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins Thursday in Madison. At 103 pounds, Whitnall senior Kameron Bourgeois (44-1) will take on Manitowoc Lincoln freshman Zach Youngchild (41-2) at 3 p.m. The winner will take on Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln senior Jason Munoz (38-8) or Holmen freshman Darius Wright (36-6) later that evening. Bourgeois and Munoz are two of only three seniors and four upperclassmen in the 16-wrestler field. Greenfield senior Taylor Wirtz (32-8) will face Milton junior Garrett Whitehead (44-4) in a 130-pound match at 3 p.m. Thursday. The winner advances to face …

Whitnall's Bourgeois, Greenfield Duo Statebound

Three wrestlers will represent the city at WIAA state wrestling meet next weekend.

Kameron Bourgeois added three more wins to his impressive season tally and, as a result, will be making a return trip to the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Wrestling Tournament next weekend in Madison. Bourgeois, a 103-pound Whitnall senior, pinned his first two opponents at the Greenfield Sectional on Saturday before beating Ferriez Johnson, 10-6, in the championship match. Bourgeois improved to 44-1 and is one of three wrestlers who will represent the city at the state meet. Greenfield’s Andrew Krueger (35-5) will be making his first state appearance one year after the senior failed to get out of the regional. He had no such problems this time around, winning three times Saturday, including a pin in 1 minute, 37 seconds of Kenosha …

Regardless of how far KB and the Greenfield guys go in the state tournament (and I hope to see all three on the podium), it's great to see some local news coverage of their efforts. They're not in it for the recognition, but they deserve it. Thanks, David.   more ›

Two GHS Wrestlers Chasing 100 Career Victories

Seniors Andrew Krueger and Taylor Wirtz hope to join exclusive club this season.

The Greenfield High School wrestling program has had plenty of success in its history, producing 14 conference championship teams over the years. But despite that steady success, only eight Greenfield wrestlers have reached the 100-win plateau. Seniors Andrew Krueger and Taylor Wirtz, four-year varsity wrestlers and two of Greenfield's three captains this winter, are hoping to swell that elite group to 10. Wirtz, a state qualifier a year ago, went 29-16 as a junior to boost his career mark to 68-60 entering this season. With a dual-meet victory against Whitnall's Evan Olson on Dec. 22, Wirtz improved to 7-2 this year and 75-62 overall, just 25 wins shy of 100. Despite getting sick the week of regionals and suffering a season-ending, first-…
