Shakeup of Whitnall School Board Includes Change at Top

Bill Osterndorf stepped down as president Nov. 21, and will not seek re-election to the board this spring.

Updated: 1:50 p.m. Nov. 30 The Whitnall School Board has a new president, and come this spring, it will have at least one new member. Bill Osterndorf, one of two incumbents whose terms are set to expire in April, has filed his non-candidacy papers and will not seek re-election for a third term. "When I originally ran, I said I'd serve two terms and then give other people a turn to serve," Osterndorf said. "I think there are people that can be effective board members over a very long period of time, but frankly, I think there is value in bringing new perspectives to the board." The district accumulated a fund balance of $10.75 million through the 2010-2011 school year. That amount was projected to reach $12.3 million next year, which would represent …

Preliminary number show the district may take in $2.3 million more in revenue than it will spend in the coming school year.

The Whitnall School Board will discuss options to address variance of nearly $2.3 million between revenue and costs for its 2011-2012 budget prior to its annual meeting Sept. 26. Based on an unaudited report of numbers affecting the budget through June, the Whitnall School District would gather $25.1 million in revenue while incurring expenses of $22.8 million in the coming school year. The report listed unaudited revenue for the previous school year of 2010-2011 as ending at $26.6 million compared to revenue of $23.9 million, a surplus of $2.7 million. “I don’t know if you classify it as over-levying or under-spending,” said interim business manager Douglas Johnson at Monday's school board meeting. Money budgeted to pay for salaries and …
