Greenfield's BloodCenter Donation in Running for Visit from Packers' Kuhn

Anyone who attempts to donate before Jan. 13 at the winning donor center will be invited to the postseason party with fullback John Kuhn.

As the BloodCenter of Wisconsin joins blood collection organizations around the country to recognize January as National Blood Donor Month — a time to honor the generosity of donors who take time out of their busy schedules to give the gift of life —the Greenfield donation center is in the running to land a visit from Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn. The BloodCenter's Run Your Route has been extended to Jan. 13. The challenge has area donor centers competing for a postseason party with Kuhn. With a little more than a week left in the competition, the Greenfield center, 7210 W. Edgerton Ave., is currently third of 11 donor centers, behind Racine's and Manitowoc's donor centers, which are tied for first. Anyone who attempts to donate …

Snowstorm Impacts Blood Donations

BloodCenter of Wisconsin asks donors to help meet patient needs

Thursday’s winter storm — or the threat of it — has resulted in cancelled donation appointments and the cancellation of several blood drives in areas where BloodCenter of Wisconsin serves patients in need. Because of the storm, BloodCenter anticipates an overall shortfall of more than 1,000 units of blood over the next two days, which would result in a shortage. BloodCenter asks that those who are able to safely keep scheduled appointments do so. And those who do not yet have an appointment can make one for Saturday, Sunday or Monday by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO or by visiting www.bcw.edu/snow. In addition, BloodCenter has extended its donor center hours at several locations this Saturday, Dec. 22. Staff will be on hand until 3 p.m. at the …

Donate Blood for Chance to Meet Packer John Kuhn

The Green Bay Packers fullback is teaming with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin for a blood donation challenge that runs through Jan. 6.

BloodCenter of Wisconsin is launching a special Run Your Route blood donation challenge featuring Green Bay fullback John Kuhn. Kuhn was inspired to be a blood donor himself because of a serious motorcycle accident which involved his father in 1981. His dad, also named John, received several units of blood following the accident. “I’m grateful for the generosity of the blood donors who helped my father – and now I hope to encourage others to save lives,” said Kuhn in a statement. The challenge, which will run from Nov. 19 to Jan. 6, 2013, encourages donors to “run their route” to their local BloodCenter of Wisconsin donor center to donate blood. The donor center with the best turnout at the end of the challenge will win a post-season party…

Trade Your Blood for a Free Summerfest Ticket

The BloodCenter of Wisconsin is thanking donors in June by handing out free Summerfest tickets in exchange for blood at nine area locations.

Rock out to your favorite Summerfest performances for free this year when you give blood at an area BloodCenter of Wisconsin donation center. The campaign is called “Give Blood, Go Free,” and it’s an effort to boost blood donations during the slow summer months. BloodCenter says between summer vacations and the decrease in school and community drives, it could use the extra donors. “Blood donations through BloodCenter of Wisconsin are a priceless gift that can help save the lives of children and adults who are seriously injured, undergoing surgery or being treated for cancer and other illnesses,” the organization said in a memo. “As a small ‘thank you’ to those generous donors, BloodCenter is offering a free ticket to Summerfest." Tickets …

Did You Save a Life Today?

You could just by stopping at the BloodCenter of Wisconsin's donation center in Greenfield.

Editor's Note: This story originally ran April 8 as part of the Patch Spring Tour. I'll be re-running this column every time I make my bi-monthly donation at Greenfield's BloodCenter of Wisconsin. You’d love to write a check for the American Red Cross or some other humanitarian effort, but just don’t have the financial means. You’ve thought about spending a few hours volunteering at a local soup kitchen or food pantry, but never seem to have the time. You want to pack up bags and bags of clothes and drop them off at Goodwill, but you just did that last season and don’t have much else to give. Still want to help your neighbor with a selfless act? Give blood. “It doesn’t cost you anything except the gas it costs to get to a donation center…

I try to donate whole blood every 8 weeks. (My iron is often low so it sometimes takes me a little longer to get it back up to eligible levels.) My dad has been a life-long donor and now donates platelets every 2 weeks. My sister also donates platelets often. It's such a simple thing and it makes a huge difference.   more ›

Patch Tour: Where I'll Be This Week

Here is a quick look at where you can find me or other Greenfield Patch folks around town.

The daily Patch Tour is designed for Greenfield Patch to build a sense of community with the residents and businesses of this great city. If you have an event or want me to stop by your business, let me know and I'll do my best to work it into my schedule, and feel free to catch up with me at any of the following events. Let's chat about what Patch can do for you and what I can do to make your Patch experience even better. Tuesday: Rain, rain, stay away for National Night Out. I will have a table set up under the tent just west of the parking lot at Konkel Park. Hopefully, I'll be hard to miss; I'll be wearing my green Patch t-shirt. I'll have Patch fliers, some other promotional items and coloring sheets and crayons for the kids (while …
