Cohn, Wentlandt Appointed Greenfield's Fire, Police Chiefs

The Police and Fire Commission appointed the interim chiefs to the permanent roles by a 3-1 vote.

Greenfield's wait for permanent police and fire chiefs is over. The Greenfield Police and Fire Commission appointed Jon Cohn as the city’s Fire Chief and Brad Wentlandt as the city’s Police Chief at a meeting at the Law Enforcement Center on Thursday. “They’ve proven themselves,” commissioner Patsy Cashmore said. “It’s pretty awesome what they’ve done (with the budget) with what little they’ve had to work with and what they’ve had to face with the upcoming budget problems the city is facing. They have to have a sense of permanency to do their job. Mayor Suggests Budget Process Serves as Assessment Tool for Interim Chiefs

Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke also recommends the Police and Fire Commission set a firm date for decision on hiring of chiefs.

Greenfield's Police and Fire Commission should assess the two interim chiefs by how they handle the tumultuous budget process the city is about to undertake, Mayor Michael Neitzke suggested to the panel Wednesday evening at the Law Enforcement Center.  During a rare appearance in front of the commission, the mayor told the commission that the next few months will pose a true test of the decision-making capabilities that the two interim chiefs possess due to the extraordinary nature of the fiscal and, as a result, personnel dilemmas the city and their departments face.  "The way that these candidates handle themselves in this budget (process) specifically … will be the strongest indicator based on what I know of any assessment process out …

Not upset. Just making some observations. When the article says a rare move, I take it at that. When the Mayor, who appoints these people, makes a rare appearance and specifically makes a point of saying that he wasn't trying to influence them, that doesn't pass the smell test, in my opinion.
