The Greenfield Police Department dog will work his last full shift this week with handler Sergeant Scott Zienkiewicz.
Several years ago, in the very early days of being a dog handler for the Greenfield Police Department, Scott Zienkiewicz would set up his patrol car on a busy Greenfield street, pull out his radar gun and wait to catch someone speeding. Occasionally, the stillness of waiting would be broken by a friendly paw poking Zienkiewicz’s arm or shoulder through the sliding window that separates the front and back seats, often times startling Zienkiewicz and reminding him that he was not alone. For the last 7 ½ years, Zienkiewicz has had Badger by his side. But this week, Badger is retiring, his last full shift being Tuesday evening. And Zienkiewicz will soon be manning his squad car without his trusted companion. “When (the retirement) got moved up…

A quick afternoon thunderstorm produced high winds that knocked down as many as 15 trees that needed to be cleared from city streets Monday.
An afternoon thunderstorm that brought with it plenty of wind, rain and hail hung around Greenfield just long enough to be a nuisance. Just how much of a nuisance remains to be seen. According to Division of Public Works Superintendent Dan Ewert, four, two-person crews were called in to clear at least 15 trees from city streets after the storm. In addition, Ewert reported flooding in the basement of City Hall. The extent of the damage was not known as of 10:30 p.m. Monday. Greenfield police responded to more than a dozen calls for downed trees, some of which were blocking roads; more than 10 building alarm calls; and 15 calls about flooding, according to Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt. Since moving across 76th Street last August, Greenfield police have responded to double the calls from the store, and neighbors have concerns for their safety.
Two Milwaukee men were arrested recently for alleged retail theft after they attempted to walk out of Greenfield's Pick 'n Save with more than $300 worth of energy drinks. Before being caught by store employees, however, one of the men fled the scene. He jumped a fence into the backyard of one of the neighboring residences. When he was apprehended, police found a crack pipe in his pants pocket, according to the Greenfield Police Department Aug. 13 report. Three days later, some of those same neighbors witnessed a woman clean out a purse she allegedly just stole from the Pick 'n Save parking lot. Minutes earlier, she and her male companion grabbed the purse from a woman's cart, hopped the fence and made their way through the neighborhood …

Schossmann's Subaru City donated a high-performance Subaru STI to the Greenfield Police Department, making it one of few in the country to have that vehicle in its fleet.
While lining up vehicles for Schlossmann’s Subaru City’s annual car show about three years ago, Steven Claflin contacted some colleagues in Itasca, Ill. and asked if the city’s police department would bring up its Subaru STI for the event. The high-performance vehicle-turned-squad car was an instant hit. “It drew a big crowd,” Claflin said. “It gave some kids goose bumps. There was more of a crowd around that car than any other car in our parking lot. It created a good buzz.” After the car show, Claflin wanted to bring that buzz to the area on a more permanent basis. This summer, thanks to Claflin’s legwork and owner Mike Schlossmann’s generosity, the Greenfield Police Department now has its own STI in the fold. Schlossmann’s Subaru agreed…

A Greenfield business owner had his secondhand jewelry dealer license revoked after officials found false and misleading information on his application.
A Greenfield business owner had his renewal application for a secondhand jewelry dealer license denied after officials found false and misleading information on the application. The Greenfield Common Council originally approved a license for Francisco Sandino, owner of Jewelry Repair Shop, 6205 S. 27th St., on May 15. But the council revisited the approval Tuesday and reversed course. In years past, Francisco Sandino filled out the application for his Greenfield store. He was listed as the owner on this year’s application, which had his daughter Nathalie Sandino listed as the applicant. City code requires an applicant to disclose instances in which their license, or those of anyone else listed on the application, may have been denied, …

The Greenfield Police Department had a game plan in place to prevent any incident from getting out of hand.
Dan Jansen Family Fest was relatively quiet, with mostly minor incidents requiring police involvement at the 18th annual installment of the festival at Konkel Park May 25-27. The Greenfield Police Department responded to two fights Sunday, one involving two juveniles and another involving two adults at the beer tent at approximately 10 p.m. On Friday, an 18-year-old was taken into custody for carrying a concealed knife without a permit, and later, in a separate incident, a Milwaukee Police Department officer found a knife hidden on the grounds and turned it over to Greenfield police. Chief Brad Wentlandt said Captains Jay Johnson and Mike Brunner had a strong plan in place, including a significant police presence that featured six officers…

Local police are installing automated camera systems that can read and react to problem plates in an instant, keeping patrol officers safer and making them manifestly more efficient.
Suppose you are a police patrol officer. As you cruise the streets – even the highway – you keep your eyes safely on the road, both hands firmly on the wheel. At the same time, you scan every approaching car, every car in front of you, every car parked along the side of the road. You know in an instant when any one of those cars, even in heavy traffic, even in very fast traffic, has so much as an expired registration. You know in an instant when one of those cars has been reported stolen, or that it was seen as the getaway car in an armed robbery. Are you some kind of super-cop? Nope. No human has that capability. But local police officers, including those in Greenfield and Wauwatosa, soon will have it, thanks to technology that up to now …
