Bruce Bailey Remains School Board President

He was a unanimous choice by his peers at a Greenfield School Board meeting Monday.

Bruce Bailey, the Greenfield School Board president for several years, was re-elected to that position Monday. Bailey was the only board member nominated for the position and was chosen unanimously. “It’s challenging but maybe this year there won’t be as much turmoil,” Bailey said. Former board president Pam Sierzchulski was re-elected as vice president. Cathy Walsh moved over from clerk to treasurer and newly re-elected Rick Moze is the new clerk.

Salvation Army Offers to Purchase School District's Chapman Lot

The Salvation Army wants to renovate and use the former Chapman school and administrative office facility currently on the property for a core community center, church and recreational purposes.

The Salvation Army is interested in purchasing a valuable piece of Greenfield real estate owned by the Greenfield School District and considered by some as a key component to the city’s economic growth. The Salvation Army wants to renovate and use the former Chapman school and administrative office facility currently on the property for a core community center, church and recreational purposes. Financial terms of the offer, received by the district April 4, were not publically discussed at a School Board meeting Monday. Interim business manager Ronald Nortier said he has also had discussions with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, which has expressed interest in the land and encouraged Board members to decide how they want to …

Stakeholders Will Have Say in Greenfield Superintendent Search

A series of focus group sessions have been scheduled for Feb. 21. Meanwhile, the board has re-shifted its focus to hiring an interim superintendent.

Parents, taxpayers, school staff and officials are invited to participate in focus groups next week, to help decide what the School District of Greenfield should look for in its new superintendent. The meetings are designed to let all stakeholders participate as district officials gather characteristics and qualities desired in the new district administrator, following the resignation of Conrad Farner last month. “It’s very important that we have everyone’s opinion,” School Board president Bruce Bailey said. “We ultimately have to make the decision, but we want everybody’s input. “We want to make sure we get the right person, someone who’s committed to the community and committed to education.” The five group meetings, to be held Feb. 21, …

Greenfield School Board Decides to Wait, Again

Board members put off a decision to replace former Superintendent Conrad Farner on an interim basis until Feb. 11, nearly a full month after Farner's last day.

Greenfield School Board member Russ Spahn was only kidding, but he might as well have been serious when he told Assistant to the Superintendent Erica Wendelberger to “just book the room for every Monday night.” Spahn made the joke Monday after board members unanimously decided to table an important decision regarding the filling of the superintendent vacancy for yet another week. On the agenda for the second straight week was a discussion and possible decision to “approve compensation for performance of additional duties related to the Superintendent and Director of Business Services roles.” Options include hiring an interim superintendent or allowing the duties of the superintendent to be fulfilled from an administrator within the …

School Board Contemplates Next Move to Fill Administrative Vacancies

The ever-changing landscape of the Greenfield School District administration could become a bit clearer at a special School Board meeting Monday.

The ever-changing landscape of the Greenfield School District administration could become a bit clearer at a special School Board meeting Monday. Though an agenda has not yet been published on the district website as of 10 a.m. Friday, Board president Bruce Bailey said board members are expected to interview multiple search firms, one of which will help them find a permanent superintendent to replace Conrad Farner, who resigned in early January. Bailey would not say how many firms will be questioned, but said the meeting would begin at 5:45 p.m. and each firm would receive 30 minutes to state its case in closed session. Once the interviews are complete, the Board will convene to open session and will likely choose a firm, Bailey said. In…

School Start Time Change Gaining Steam?

Administration will look at costs associated with two new, later times for Greenfield High School, where students currently begin class at 7:10 a.m.

Greenfield School Board members appear to be coming around on changing the Greenfield High School start time. That includes members who initially changed the start time to 7:10 a.m. about 6 years ago, and those who voted against a move to start school later in 2011. Board members directed administration to find out busing costs associated with either moving the high school start time to 7:30 a.m. and leaving all the rest of the schools as they are now, and moving the high school to 7:45 a.m. and pushing back the Middle School by 12 minutes to 7:30 a.m. and Maple Grove and Elm Dale elementary schools back 30 minutes to 8:45 a.m., a plan proposed in 2011. The board rejected the latter two years ago because it came with a $210,000 price tag …

The school times need to change. In this economy, we need to work. With Maple Grove starting at 9:15a.m., it is hard to find a job that lets you start at 9:30 or later. The Greenfield schools offer morning daycare at an outrageous price. We need to change the GHS start times and the elementary schools need to start earlier.   more ›

School Board Unsure How to Fill Superintendent Vacancy

Conrad Farner's resignation is effective at the end of the day Jan. 15, and no interim superintendent is in place.

One week after accepting Superintendent Conrad Farner's resignation and forging a pricey separation agreement with him, the Greenfield School Board is undecided on how to proceed with filling the vacancy. Farner’s resignation is effective at the end of the day Tuesday. For hours in closed session Monday evening, board members debated the pros and cons of naming an interim superintendent but came away with no clear-cut solution. A statement issued by the School Board said, “The School District of Greenfield Board of Education is in the process of filling the Superintendent position and will be making a final decision that is in best interest of the Greenfield community in the coming week.  “We are grateful to have such a committed team of …

Conrad Farner Resigns as Greenfield Superintendent

Farner has accepted a position in the Cedarburg School District. His resignation is effective Jan. 15.

UPDATED: 11:55 a.m. Jan. 8 Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner, who for months had been under growing scrutiny by some Greenfield School Board members, resigned Monday during a special closed session school board meeting. Farner, whose contract with Greenfield was not set to expire until 2014, has accepted a position as the Director of Human Resources with the Cedarburg School District. According to a statement released by the School Board, Farner’s resignation is effective Jan. 15. Terms of Farner’s separation agreement require the district to contribute approximately $80,000 over three years to a tax-sheltered annuity account. The tax-sheltered payments are designed to offset the waiver of significant contractual rights under Farner’…

Greenfield School Board Questions Referendum Funds Spending

A concession stand with a price tag of nearly $70,000 has some board members wondering if the money is being well spent.

Of all the projects completed with the $37.8 million in referendum money approved back in 2007, perhaps none has undergone more scrutiny than a 12-by-12-foot concession stand erected on the north side of Greenfield High School. Some Greenfield School Board members want to know why it cost so much to build, and was there an opportunity to save money. The concession stand came with a $68,000 price tag, roughly half of which was funded by referendum money and the other half through the district’s buildings and grounds budget. Three months ago, board member Cathy Walsh asked that the board be provided with details on how referendum money has been spent, and what the remaining funds will be spent on. At that time, she said she was embarrassed …

District Will Ask Employees to Return Money

The Greenfield School District will look to recoup more than $25,000 from employees that should have been withheld from their paychecks in 2011, the Greenfield School Board was told Monday.

The Greenfield School District will ask employees to pay back more than $25,000 that should have been withheld from paychecks in 2011, the Greenfield School Board learned Monday. A change in state law in 2011 that made it illegal for employers to contribute to the Wisconsin Retirement System on behalf of their employees resulted in the withholding mistake. According to a tax lawyer who addressed the board Monday, the “under withholding” issue inadvertently occurred for four quarters, starting in August 2011. The district paid the withholding difference for the last two quarters of 2011; employees paid it during the first two quarters of 2012. The district will ask employees to return the equivalent of 1.6 percent of the payroll spending, …
