City Will Keep Land Coveted in Buddhist Temple Proposal

The Planning Commission was not in favor of vacating the right-of-way wanted by temple officials and needed to build a proposed 8,100-square-foot temple near 43rd Street and Edgerton Avenue.

A proposal to build a Buddhist temple in a residential neighborhood west of 43rd Street and Edgerton Avenue in Greenfield faced many, many obstacles ranging from parking concerns to resident opposition. But perhaps the biggest - the city's decision not to vacate a half-acre of land that could be used in the future to build a street - has proven to be the biggest hurdle of all, so far. Buddhist Temple Wants to Relocate to Residential Greenfield Neighborhood

Phuoc Hau Buddhist Temple, which has called Milwaukee home for 15 years, is interested in building a temple on Edgerton Avenue.

Phuoc Hau Buddhist Temple of Milwaukee, which has worshiped at 1575 W. Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee, for 15 years, wants to move its temple to Greenfield. At Tuesday’s Plan Commission meeting, temple officials will request a conceptual project review for a proposed 8,100-square-foot place of worship on a 1.5-acre area which represents a combination of the approximately one acre Phuoc Hau already owns at 44th and Edgerton Avenue, and the adjacent half-acre of the 44th Street right-of-way. The proposal would eventually require the city alderpersons to rezone the land from residential to institutional. All property containing a house of worship is currently tax exempt. That is not the issue here. The issue is that the City of Greenfield is again treating one religion differently than it is another. The large lobbying skilled Ridge Church has been granted a tax exemption on a valuable piece commercial land.
