Should Smoking Be Allowed on City Grounds?

The city is considering an exception to an ordinance that prohibits it to allow people to smoke on a patio outside of the Community Center.

The City of Greenfield is considering a change to its smoking ordinance that would allow people who rent out the Community Center to smoke on city grounds. Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jaquish would like an exception made to the ordinance that prohibits smoking on city grounds, except for in parks, to exclude a 4-foot by 8-foot concrete patio on the north side of the Community Center, according to minutes from the November Board of Health meeting. The reason behind Jaquish’s request is the city has received complaints from neighbors, specifically those in the apartment complex across the street from the center, about people attending functions or events at the center leaving the area to smoke in their neighborhood. Terrace Adds Color, Beauty to City Hall Campus

With a great location near several business along the 76th Street shopping corridor, coupled with beautiful landscaping, the new Community Center terrace could become a popular lunch, relaxation spot.

Looking for a new spot to read a book or grab lunch while enjoying the nice weather? I've got just the spot for you. Work on the beautiful new Community Center terrace is complete. The project just south of the building began in late April, and the site now includes two concrete benches, several round picnic-style tables, a brick patio and gorgeous landscaping. The terrace was made possible by a generous donation from longtime Greenfield resident Bill Radler. Radler, the former director at Boerner Botanical Gardens donated several trees, shrubs and flowers for the terrace, and paid all the labor on a project with a price tag of more than $100,000. Nips, Tucks Continue as City Hall Campus Prepares for Facelift

The city's Arbor Day celebration will focus on the areas around City Hall and the Community Center.

On a dreary and soggy Friday morning, steps were being taken to make Greenfield's City Hall campus vibrant and beautiful. Division of Public Works employees were busy digging holes for 29 trees and 30 rose bushes to be planted during the city's annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday. Meanwhile, employees of Terra-Firma Landscaping Inc. worked earnestly on the area south of the Community Center, where a new terrace is being built thanks to a generous donation by longtime Greenfield resident Bill Radler. City Hall Campus to Benefit from Arbor Day Celebration

The city's annual celebration will focus improving the area around City Hall and the Greenfield Community Center.

In two short weeks, the Greenfield Beautification Committee will be focusing its annual Arbor Day Celebration efforts cleaning, and green-ing up the City Hall campus. But initial steps have already been taken. In recent weeks, City Forester Dennis Fermenich identified several declining ash trees around City Hall and the Community Center, trees susceptible to Emerald Ash Borer. The trees, as well as several large shrubs, were marked with pink ribbons and taken down by Division of Public Works employees. Longtime Parks Department Employee to be Honored

Sharon Meier and a host of others will be recognized at the department's annual banquet.

Recently retired administrative assistant Sharon Meier headlines a list of 2011 award recipients to be honored at the Greenfield Department of Parks and Recreation annual hall of fame and staff recognition banquet. The banquet is Friday, Feb. 17, at the Community Center, 7215 W. Cold Spring Rd. Meier retired in October after 18 years with the department and is this year's hall of fame inductee. Meier will not be in attendance but will join the awards ceremony via Skype from Alaska, where she and her husband now reside. Animal Shelter, Community Center Sign on Tap for Common Council

Residents will have a chance to weigh in on the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center's proposed move from Southridge Mall to Greenfield.

Operators of the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center - and the animals that rely on the center's services - will find out if Christmas comes early at Tuesday's Common Council Meeting. There will be a public hearing to discuss the special use permit required by the center to move from Southridge Mall to 5101 West Loomis Road, the location formerly operated by Custom Design Associates. Approving Community Center Sign Could Send Mixed Messages

The Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department has a proposal on the table for a new electronic reader board that does not follow the city's sign code.

High upon Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jaquish’s Christmas list is an electronic reader board to compliment the city’s beautiful new Community Center. The center, formerly the city’s library, has been open since July and since then has been adorned only with a static sign on the north end of the lot that still reads “Future Home of the Greenfield Community Center.” At Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. Plan Commission meeting at City Hall, Jaquish, along with Mark Rausch of Clear Channel, will ask for a sign waiver that would allow Clear Channel to construct a reader board monument that stands 8 ½ feet high and 14 feet long. Where to Stay Cool in Greenfield During Heat Wave

The library, community center and police station will be open to those who need it.

In response to the extended period of severe heat and humidity, the City of Greenfield has opened several cooling stations where residents can go to escape the heat. They include the Greenfield Community Center and Greenfield Public Library, open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and the Greenfield Police Department, which is open 24 hours through Friday night. In addition, Greendale Patch has compiled a list of Greendale locations that will also provide relief to the extreme temperatures, including Southridge Mall. The city new facility was both much needed and highly anticipated.

When it comes to the nuts and bolts of a community, the City of Greenfield’s wish list is just about complete. With the grand opening of the city's new community center, 7215 W.
