City Picks Date for Initial Farmers Market

The market will be held throughout the summer at Konkel Park.

The much anticipated Greenfield Farmers Market has an official start date. According to Greenfield’s Health Director Darren Rausch, the Greenfield Farmers Market Planning Committee was overwhelmed with responses from the online community interest survey. Based on feedback from both the community and the potential vendors, the city has picked Sunday, June 23, for its initial market. The farmers market will run weekly through the last weekend of October. The market will be held at Konkel Park, 5151 W. Layton Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a meeting in May, time and date to be determined, for those community members who expressed interest in participating on the committee or in volunteering. The city is still seeking vendor …

Should Smoking Be Allowed on City Grounds?

The city is considering an exception to an ordinance that prohibits it to allow people to smoke on a patio outside of the Community Center.

The City of Greenfield is considering a change to its smoking ordinance that would allow people who rent out the Community Center to smoke on city grounds. Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jaquish would like an exception made to the ordinance that prohibits smoking on city grounds, except for in parks, to exclude a 4-foot by 8-foot concrete patio on the north side of the Community Center, according to minutes from the November Board of Health meeting. The reason behind Jaquish’s request is the city has received complaints from neighbors, specifically those in the apartment complex across the street from the center, about people attending functions or events at the center leaving the area to smoke in their neighborhood. Some neighbors …

Flu: What You Need to Know

This year's flu season is the worst in five years.

The influenza season has not peaked yet, but statewide hospitalizations related to flu are up three-fold over previous years. Flu cases in the Milwaukee area have increased to an “intense” level, significantly exceeding moderate levels in 2011-12, according to Google Flu Trends. Wisconsin is among 42 states to have a widespread flu outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All 50 states are reporting symptoms, with Hawaii only reporting sporadic cases. More than 1,200 people in Wisconsin have been hospitalized because of flu symptoms, creating crowding problems at Milwaukee-area hospitals, according to Today’s TMJ4. In a statewide conference call yesterday, health officials were told of the significant jump in …

Next Two Months Critical for Pacific Produce

Food safety compliance problems and other issues at Pacific Produce, 5455 S. 27th St., have persisted since it opened in November 2010.

Pacific Produce owner Sat Le has two more months to save his popular Asian supermarket. The Board of Health agreed to postpone a discussion regarding the possible revocation of Le’s license because of food code violations until Nov. 8, essentially granting Le two more months to get his business in order. Le made the postponement request because his food safety consultant could not attend Thursday’s meeting. “It’s not really an extension of any sort,” said Darren Rausch, the city’s health director. “Essentially, nothing changes between now and November.” Food safety compliance problems and other issues at Pacific Produce, 5455 S. 27th St., have persisted since it opened in November 2010. The biggest issues included employee knowledge and …

Whooping Cough, West Nile Virus Cases in Greenfield

There are now 49 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in Greenfield, and there has been another probable case of West Nile Virus.

The number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases in Greenfield has climbed to 49 as of Sept. 13, nearly five times as many as the previous two years combined. In 2011, there were four total cases and in 2010, there were six. “The increase is substantial but we’re seeing increases across the country and across the state,” said Greenfield Health Director Darren Rausch, who provided an update to the Board of Health on Thursday. “We had a huge peak of cases in the late April, May timeframe as school was winding down and then we had a drop-off in the summer, which is not unusual. It was rock-bottom in August and now that school is back in session, we’ll likely see an increase." The Wisconsin Department of Health reported 4,181 confirmed or …

People With Insurance May No Longer Get Health Department Vaccines

Residents with insurance that provides vaccine coverage must visit a health care provider and not the clinic.

An estimated quarter of all patients who visit the Greenfield Health Department for vaccinations after Oct. 1 could be turned away, according to the city’s chief health official. Health Officer/Director Darren Rausch said changes in federal funding will impact whom the city’s serves in just a few short weeks. The Health Department will no longer be able to vaccinate persons who have insurance that covers the cost of vaccines due to the elimination of federal 317 funding effective at the start of the next federal fiscal year, or Oct. 1. This change coincides with a recent change required by the Affordable Care Act that provides coverage of preventive services – including vaccination without impacting the insurance deductible, according to …

The department is one of 13 local public health agencies part of the Milwaukee/Waukesha County Consortium for Emergency Public Health Preparedness.

The Milwaukee/Waukesha County Consortium for Emergency Public Health Preparedness was recognized by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) for being ready to handle large scale public health emergencies. The consortium, which consists of the 13 local public health agencies in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, submitted an extensive application and received honors through the Project Public Health Ready initiative that NACCHO is conducting with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. City's Health Department Continues Close Eye On Whooping Cough Outbreak

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, continues to be an issue in Greenfield and throughout the state.

The city's chief health official indicated Thursday that the Health Department continues to keep a close eye on pertussis, which has swept through the state and the area at a pace not seen in eight years.  The city has had 40 confirmed cases of whooping cough in 2012, Darren Rausch, the city's health director, reported to the Board of Health on Thursday. Last year the city had four cases after having six in 2010 and four in 2009.  The amount of pertussis in Greenfield mirrors the recent outbreak throughout the state. A total of 2,815 cases have been reported this year in Wisconsin. The state is on pace to match the outbreak in 2004 when 5,600 cases were reported.  "There is still disease out there, it has just shifted from the school …

Decision to end Fluoridation in Milwaukee Would Impact Greenfield

A Milwaukee alderman wants to end the process. Greenfield's water is purchased from Milwaukee Water Works, which provides water to 16 communities and nearly 1 million residents.

Greenfield Health Director Darren Rausch is adamantly opposed to a effort by a Milwaukee alderman to stop the city's fluoridation of Milwaukee's drinking water. Ald. Jim Bohl believes residents are receiving too much fluoride, a mineral long used in combination with water to prevent decay. Bohl's proposal to immediately stop fluoridating the city's drinking water is to be heard by the Common Council's Steering & Rules Committee at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, in Room 301-B at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St. Greenfield's water is purchased from Milwaukee Water Works, which provides water to 16 communities and nearly 1 million residents, according to Rausch, who issued this letter to the committee Wednesday: "Dear Steering and Rules Committee Member: "As…

They are not fluoridating water with a "mineral". It's hazardous waste from the scrubbers of fertilizer industries and they are disposing of it through our bodies and making us pay for it!!   more ›

Pacific Produce Supermarket to Get Another Chance

The new supermarket on 27th Street has come precariously close to having its retail food license revoked by the Greenfield Health Department after several recurring violations have been uncovered over the last year and a half.

Pacific Produce is getting a second life, just in time to prevent the popular Asian supermarket at 5455 S. 27th Street from making city of Greenfield history. And not the good kind of history. For more than a year, the Greenfield Health Department has been monitoring the new supermarket, which operates in the former Kohl’s Food Store location, and dedicating an unordinary amount of resources to the location after several food violations – both major and minor – were uncovered. On Thursday, Darren Rausch, the city's health director, is expected to suggest to the Board of Health that Pacific Produce owner Sat Le be allowed to renew his retail food license for the supermarket under the same conditions the board placed on Le’s license in …
