Edgewood Girls Running To Success

This fall, 18 Edgewood Elementary School girls participated in the Girls on the Run program that taught them the benefits of running, promoted self-confidence and tackled issues young women face.

When Madi Jankowski practiced with her Girls on the Run teammates last Thursday, the fourth grader at Edgewood Elementary School fell tantalizingly short of her goal of 15 laps around the school. “I tried to get as much of the 5k as I could, which was 15 laps around the school, and I got 12,” Madi said Tuesday. Goal setting like Madi’s has been the focus all fall for the 18 girls and three volunteer coaches that have comprised Edgewood’s first-ever Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a national program designed to promote self-confidence and healthy choices in pre-teen girls, with a curriculum that incorporates running. Edgewood’s participants are third- through fifth-graders. Volunteer coaches are Edgewood teachers Jennifer Hannis…

Edgewood Elementary to Benefit from McTeacher Night at McDonald's

The school fundraiser will be held at McDonald's, 4275 S. 27th St., Nov. 27.

Many Milwaukee teachers and principals will get a chance this month to “work” a shift behind the counter at McDonald’s and raise money for their schools. The educators are taking part in a McTeacher’s Night fundraiser, a special evening that gives schools the opportunity to raise funds for programs, equipment and any other special projects for the school. Schools are rewarded with a percentage of all sales generated during the program’s three-hour period from 5-8 p.m. Starting November 12, more than 75 McTeacher’s Nights are planned throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Greenfield's McDonald's, 4275 S. 27th St., will host McTeacher Nights on Nov. 27 for Edgewood Elementary and Jan. 22 for Lowell Elementary in Milwaukee. “We are proud to …

Zombies, Creativity Could Land Greenfield Kid $10,000

Jack Tornio, 8, is a finalist in the CLIF Kids Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs and will present his game, Zombie Hunt, to a panel of judges in San Francisco on Saturday.

Back in April, Jack Tornio begrudgingly went to his sister’s gymnastics practice. He quickly became bored, a typical reaction for an 8-year-old. But that boredom soon gave way to creativity and Jack, who will be a third grader at Edgewood Elementary School this fall, may have created a game that could be played for hours by children across the country. During that gymnastics practice, Jack laid the foundation for Zombie Hunt, now one of six finalists in the CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs. Jack and his mother Stacy will be in San Francisco this weekend to present the game to a panel of judges, with a $10,000 grand prize on the line. Stacy said a family friend whose hobbies include nature-related activities told the Tornios …

Edgewood Elementary Progresses by Staying Positive

The Edgewood staff was named a school of merit by the Wisconsin PBIS Network for its implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

When you walk into Edgewood Elementary School next fall, you’re likely to hear another language being spoken by students, teachers and principal Sue Sterner. No, not Spanish or German, but rather the language of PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction-funded initiative aimed at improving student behaviors and learning atmospheres. “We have a voice level system. You can walk into any room, and any teacher can say, ‘Can you put your voices at zero and (the students) all go silent,” Edgewood kindergarten teacher Sarah Jegier said. “Anyone in the building can use the language and they know what to do.” Said Sterner: “If you say, ‘Give me five,’ they all know to put their hand up, …
