A developer wants to build 12 single-family homes just east of the elementary school.
A 6.3-acre plot of land on Greenfield’s east side that has gone undeveloped for decades while areas around it have become more and more residential could be turned into a subdivision. Sean Phelan would like to take the northwest corner of a wooded area near 37th Street and convert it into a 12-lot, single-family subdivision called Tuckaway Woods. Lot sizes would range from 12,100 square feet to 26,700 square feet. All the homes would be within walking distance of Elm Dale Elementary School, which sits just west of the proposed subdivision. The previous owner of the land was given the OK by the city to build condominiums on the site back in 2001. In 2005, another plan was brought before the city to build 10 duplexes in the area. But …

Three schools are slated for safety improvements after the city was awarded more than $170,000 in grant money through the Safe Routes to School program.
Updated 9:15 a.m. Dec. 4 Making areas around schools safer continues to be a priority for the City of Greenfield and the Greenfield and Whitnall school districts, but as municipalities and districts are charged with tightening their belts, those improvements aren’t always feasible. So when Director of Neighborhood Services Richard Sokol found out the city was one of 17 projects awarded grant money for Safe Routes to School projects, his excitement was understandable. The state announced grants totaling $3.3 million as part of a federally funded reimbursement program that encourages children in grades K-8 to walk or bike to school, when safe and practical. “We are proud to partner with local communities to develop safe bicycling and walking…

First, Elm Dale was the recipient of $1,000 worth of gift cards. Then, principal Christine Bryzcki was informed of another surprise gift.
Elm Dale Elementary School got an unexpected gift – make that two gifts – as part of Walmart’s Teacher Reward Program that awarded more than $4 million to 90,000 teachers during the 2012 back-to-school season. Principal Christine Brzycki was initially told by Walmart her school had been chosen to receive $1,000 worth of gift cards for her teachers to use on supplies and snacks. Then, upon delivery of the gift cards on Sept. 28, Walmart also brought $8,500 worth of school supplies. “The (Walmart) employees voted on the school to donate to,” Brzycki told the Greenfield School Board on Monday. “At first I thought it was a joke when they called.” Walmart’s donation, which was approved by the board Monday, was the third large donation the …

Twenty-six summer school students participated in a Lego education class, where students learned about gears and simple machines, problem-solving and social skills and so much more.
About two dozen Greenfield elementary school kids were sad to have summer school come to an end Friday. No, seriously. They were upset. Distraught. Bummed out. Literally. At least, that was the common reaction among the 26 students in teacher Catrina Grosz’s Lego Education WeDo class at Elm Dale Elementary School. “It’s the last day, which really stinks,” Nathan Popovich, 9, said. The popular summer-school enrichment offering taught or enhanced what students already knew about gears and simple machines, problem-solving and social skills and so much more. “The ability to work with others, teamwork,” Grosz said. “That’s a skill they’ve all had to learn. They each bring their own level of (Lego-building) skill set, but what they are leaving …
