Greenfield School Sock Drive Organizer had MLK in Mind

The Glenwood Home and School Association is hosting a sock drive through Jan. 31.

The holiday season might be over, but the generosity of a local school organization has not been tucked away for the next 11 months. The Glenwood Home and School Association is sponsoring a sock drive for the homeless. Children, parents, guardians, teachers and even people with no ties to Glenwood Elementary School, are encouraged to donate new, unused socks in a collection bin located outside of the school office through Jan. 31. The drive allows Glenwood families and others help the community’s homeless keep warm this winter in an easy and affordable manner. Melanie O’Brien, a frequent Greenfield Patch contributor and the secretary of the Glenwood Home and School Association, wanted to do a service project in conjunction with Martin …

The mother of my child has taken my son & refuses to let me me see him. If she has the right to be with him then so do I pursuant to the 14th amendment, if she does not have that right then why is my son with her? I have all the documents proving I am his father. This is a DIRECT VIOLATION of the 14th amendment. ALL PERSONS born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction…   more ›

Tears Flow, Excitement Felt As School Starts Throughout Greenfield

Greenfield schools began the school year Thursday morning.

Tears from both eyes found their way from behind saucer-sized sun glasses down her cheeks as she walked away from the school building.   "He's 4. He's 4. It's the first time, he's the first one," said Janelle Lombardo, moments after leaving her preschool child for the first time at Glenwood Elementary School on Thursday morning.   "He'll be fine. I'll be fine," she said as she gently wipes tears from her face and laughed at her emotions. "It's just that initial shock that he is a big boy in school now." The scene repeated itself at bus stops, in idling vehicles and at school entryways throughout the city as the school districts ushered in a new school year.  For some mothers, however, the day was exciting rather than sad.  "I'm very …

Glenwood Teachers Made Into Human Sundaes

The event capped off the school's reading campaign.

Students at Glenwood Elementary School enjoyed watching two of their teachers being made into sundaes Thursday afternoon. As part of the school’s Caterpillar Crawl Reading Challenge, a program that encourages students to read on their own at home, teachers Catrina Grosz and Julie Eisenhauer put on goggles and rain ponchos and let the three students who read the most during the challenge cover them with sundae toppings. (Be sure to watch the attached video!) The “Sundae Ceremony” was the culminating event that celebrated and drew attention to the importance of reading at home. The students read at home, filled out a record sheet and had it signed by a parent. The students then turn in completed reading sheets to their teacher. For every …

School Officials Indicate No Truth to Long-lived School Closing Rumor

Surrounding neighborhood would fight tooth and nail, according to parent leader.

School officials do not plan to close a school within the Greenfield School District in the foreseeable future, squashing persistent rumors of the contrary. For years, parents and residents have heard whispers throughout the district that a school - namely Glenwood Elementary - would be shut down. Closing a school has been, on occasion, on a School Board list of ways to save money but, according to Superintendent Conrad Farner, there is no plan to do so. "I don't hear any kind of talk about that from the community when I am out at schools or events in Greenfield," Farner said. "It's certainly kind of out there as a possible thing that could be done, but I do not recall the board having any serious dialog about closing Glenwood." Farner …
