Greenfield Boys Basketball Team's Season Ends Abruptly

The Hustlin' Hawks got off to a cold start at home against Racine Park and never recovered Tuesday night.

The Greenfield boys basketball team was unable to duplicate its moderate postseason success from a year ago and was bounced from the WIAA postseason Tuesday. The Hustlin' Hawks scored the first three points of the game but never led again in a 69-55 loss to Racine Park. The Hawks finished the season 10-13 overall, one year after they won five games, including one in the first round of the playoffs. Get great local stories like this on Facebook. Click to join us! "I thought both teams came out a little lethargic or timid at first, and we did dig ourselves a hole," Greenfield head coach Jack Miller told Greenfield NOW. "Usually, we are a better shooting team than we were tonight, but we did manage to come back a couple times." Ricky Santiago…

Greenfield sounds like they had a pretty good season overall but for Ricky Santiago, that is a huge achievement for a high school athlete.   more ›

Hawks' Middle School Hoops Team Wins Conference Tournament

The boys basketball team capped off its season with three straight wins in the conference tournament at South Milwaukee.

The future of the Greenfield High School boys basketball team could be bright. On Jan. 24-25, the Greenfield Middle School's eighth-grade boys’ basketball team won the Junior Southeast Conference Tournament at South Milwaukee High School. The squad finished 10-3 overall, including three straight victories in the conference tournament. In the tournament, they made eight 3-pointers and defeated Oak Creek, 56-33, in the first round; edged the Lake Denoon Timberwolves, 36-35, in the semifinals; and knocked off crosstown rival Whitnall, 37-31, in the championship game. "They showed tremendous heart and toughness to become champions," said coach and middle school teacher Joe Harkins. "It will be fun to see what they can do next year at the high …

Hawks Boys Basketball Team Extends Season with Regional Win

Greenfield will play at top-seeded Milwaukee Hamilton for the regional title Friday night.

When you win just five of 23 games, you don’t have many options to choose from when attempting to identify a signature victory. The kind of victory a coach and his players can point to in the offseason as a model for how to get things done in the future. The kind of victory that can generate momentum and keep it rolling during the “off” months. On Tuesday, the Greenfield boys basketball team, now the owner of a 5-18 record, picked up such a victory. Junior Kyle Schahczinski's basket with 1.3 seconds propelled the Hustlin’ Hawks to a 48-46 win over host Oak Creek (8-13) in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal. “That was a huge lift for us to come through and win a close one against a decent team,” first-year coach Jack Miller said. “Going …

Local Hoops Teams Winless Tuesday

Three of the four games were decided in the closing seconds.

It was a rough night for the local varsity basketball teams as all four teams lost Woodland Conference games, including the first loss of the season for the Whitnall boys. New Berlin West's Jordan McKeon knocked down a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to help give the host Vikings a 51-50 win over Whitnall, which had started the season 8-0. Stephen Pelkofer scored to lead the Falcons (8-1, 4-1). Meanwhile, at Whitnall, the girls basketball team suffered a 33-29 loss to visiting New Berlin West. Whitnall's Rachael Shulta converted a layup off a steal with less that 30 seconds left to close it to 31-29. The Vikings added two more, and with 11 seconds left, Whitnall missed a shot and a put-back attempt that fell short. "The girls played hard, …

Miller, Greenfield Boys Basketball Program Face Upward Climb

Several challenges face first-year Hustlin' Hawks coach.

Jack Miller has a track record of turning around Greenfield High School athletic programs. Miller, who has elevated the high school’s softball program into one of the area’s best, took over the school’s girls basketball program in 2002 and helped give it life after it appeared to be left for dead. And though the boys hoops program wasn’t facing as dire a situation, Miller has been called upon to pull the school back up to a level of respectability. The team went 5-19 last winter under Jim Nowak, who resigned early in the season because of health reasons, and interim coach Ed Mermolia. The program won just six games the year before and has not had a winning season since 2006-07. Enter Miller. Though he last coached boys basketball in 1989, …

It is truly just a matter of time. I was so hopeful Coach Miller would go for the coaching spot when it opened as this is my fourth child he has coached. He is all about making the kids everything they can be in the classroom and on the athletic field. Thanks Coach Miller for all that you do!!!!!!!!!!!   more ›

Whitnall Basketball Teams Continue to Roll

The boys and girls squads won Tuesday to improve to a combined 11-2.

Elena Busalacchi and Ashley Markowiak combined for 34 points as the Whitnall girls basketball team rolled to a 61-43 home win over Shorewood on Tuesday. Busalacchi led all players with 18 points, while Markowiak, the team's leading scorer at 14.7 points per game, had 16. The two players also pulled down six rebounds each. With the win, the Falcons improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Woodland Conference. "We were able to execute our half-court offense and also get some transition baskets from our defense," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. "I was pleased that we reduced our turnovers and fouls from our previous game." Meanwhile, at Shorewood, the Whitnall boys remained unbeaten (7-0 overall, 3-0 conference) with a 57-50 win. Stephen …

Photos: Whitnall Basketball Team too Much for Crosstown Rival Greenfield

The Falcons remained unbeaten by beating the Hustlin' Hawks, 70-28.

UPDATED: 11 p.m. Sunday with girls results. The Whitnall boys basketball team hosted rival Greenfield on Friday night and dominated its guests from the start. The Falcons improved to 5-0 with a 70-28 victory, thanks to an aggressive defense and balanced scoring as three players had 10 or more points. Greenfield fell to 0-4. Across town at Greenfield High School, the Whitnall girls basketball team got 17 points each from Rachael Shulta and Ashley Markowiak in a 65-48 win over the Hawks. Shulta knocked down four 3-pointers, and Elena Busalacchi chipped in with nine rebounds and seven points. "We had a good start but Greenfield kept battling back," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. "We were able to get some separation right before half and …
