Wondering when your garbage will be picked up the week of Thanksgiving? Or Christmas? According to Division of Public Works Superintendent Dan Ewert, John’s Disposal, the city’s refuse collection contractor, will run its residential routes one day after it normally does on the holiday and the rest of the week. So, for those scheduled to have their garbage picked up on Thanksgiving Day, John’s will pick up their garbage Friday, Nov. 23. And for those slated for a Nov. 23 pickup, John’s will make its pick-ups Saturday, Jan. 24. For the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s Day, those scheduled for pickups Dec. 25-28 and Jan. 1-4 can expect John’s to come one day later, with the final pickups those weeks coming Saturday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, …
Leaf pickup will begin during the week of Oct. 17.
The Division of Public Works has devised a new schedule for leaf pickup this fall with the hopes of streamlining the process. The DPW will begin fall leaf pickup during the week of Oct. 17. Residents are asked to have leaves raked out to the terrace area, the area between the sidewalk and curb/road edge or within 6 feet of the road edge) by 7 a.m. on the Monday of their designated pickup weeks. Designated pickup weeks are as follows: Aldermanic District 1, 4 and 5 – Oct. 17, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14; Aldermanic District 2 and 3 – Oct. 24, Nov. 7 and Nov. 21. Leaf pickup is a waste of time, money and nutrients. Mulching the leaves with your lawnmower actually helps to fertilize your grass, and helps to retain moisture for new grass to grow. Things that our governments do that are totally unnecessary would have leaf pickup up vs mulching at the top of the list   more ›
