How Does Greenfield, Whitnall Rate According to Milwaukee Magazine?

Both districts finished in the bottom half of rankings that included 33 public school systems in a five-county area.

This week, Whitefish Bay High School was splashed across the front page of Milwaukee Magazine, with a photo of the students decked out in their Blue Dukes spirit gear. Based on the results of a study done by the magazine, it will be a long time before Whitnall or Greenfield gets the call for a cover shot. The cover story declared Whitefish Bay as the top-scoring high school in the five-county Milwaukee area based on ACT, WKCE and Advanced Placement test results. The magazine also ranked school districts overall. In a comparison of 33 K-12 school districts in the five-county Milwaukee area, Mequon-Thiensville topped a list based on high school test scores, as well as standardized test scores from other schools in the district. So how did …

@David Cotey, I'd love it if you could get an interview with Mr. Farner and/or the school board. It would be nice to hear what plans are being made to improve our situation. School board candidates always talk a big game to get elected, but I've yet to see any that really push the school administration to fix this district. We've had an influx of open enrollment students over the last several …   more ›

Hawks Boys Basketball Team Extends Season with Regional Win

Greenfield will play at top-seeded Milwaukee Hamilton for the regional title Friday night.

When you win just five of 23 games, you don’t have many options to choose from when attempting to identify a signature victory. The kind of victory a coach and his players can point to in the offseason as a model for how to get things done in the future. The kind of victory that can generate momentum and keep it rolling during the “off” months. On Tuesday, the Greenfield boys basketball team, now the owner of a 5-18 record, picked up such a victory. Junior Kyle Schahczinski's basket with 1.3 seconds propelled the Hustlin’ Hawks to a 48-46 win over host Oak Creek (8-13) in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal. “That was a huge lift for us to come through and win a close one against a decent team,” first-year coach Jack Miller said. “Going …

Greenfield School Board Field Whittled Down to Six

Former Board member Mike Gierl was eliminated from a seven-candidate field. The ballot also featured a Milwaukee County Circuit Judge primary.

Several familiar names and faces — and a few newcomers as well — will square off for three Greenfield School Board seats April 3, after six candidates survived Tuesday’s primary. Among them is Cathy Walsh, an 18-year School Board veteran, who is trying to reclaim a seat after a two-year hiatus. Walsh was the top vote-getter in Tuesday’s election after finishing first or second in two separate Greenfield Patch polls posted in recent weeks. Walsh received 868 votes Tuesday. Vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Board of Canvassars.  "What’s nice or me is, especially after losing my last election after 18 years — that was very hard for me — I like to think people still believe in me," Walsh said. "It’s heartening for me. I really …

Greenfield School Board Race Highlights Primary Election Ballot

A circuit court judge primary is also on the ballot.

Voters heading to the polls in Greenfield on Tuesday have only two races to decide. The race with the most local impact is that of Greenfield School Board, where seven candidates are vying for three seats in April's general election. Candidates are Len Cich, Mike Gierl, incumbent Rick Moze, Paul Palama, Russ Spahn, Brad Sponholz and Cathy Walsh. One of them will be eliminated from contention tomorrow. In an unscientific poll posted by Patch on Thursday, Walsh (117 votes), Spahn (108) and Moze (40) had garnered the most votes of 304 cast by Patch users as of 4 p.m. Monday. In a Patch poll posted in January when the list of candidates was finalized, Walsh, Spahn and Moze claimed the top three spots as well. Voters will also choose a …

Guest Column: Educators Unite Despite Extreme Policies

Mary Bell, president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council, shares her thoughts on the last year.

Editor's note: This column is provided by Mary Bell, a teacher in Wisconsin Rapids and the president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council. The past 12 months have marked an unprecedented time in Wisconsin history. On Feb. 11, 2011, Governor Walker came out with his surprise attack on worker rights – announcing union-busting legislation designed to silence the voices of public employees, including teachers. Soon after, the foundation of public schools was shaken as state funding was cut by $1.6 billion. Divisiveness was embraced by state policymakers as the new way to govern. Few among us can say they haven’t been personally affected. The actions and reactions of leaders and citizens have shaken the very fabric of our communities…

Mike...Scroll up and reread my comments. Teachers don't get paid enough to have to put up with all the crap they get. And, to expect them to put up with it all with no union protection, is insane. There are a lot of nut cases out there who use the schools as a forum for their nonsense because they can.   more ›

Greenfield's Ruka, Garner Lead Way on National Signing Day

Seven Greenfield High School athletes signed their national letters of intent at the school Wednesday.

Josh Ruka, one of the state's elite offensive linemen, and Michelle Garner, one of Wisconsin's best high school hurdlers, were among the Greenfield High School athletes to sign their national letters of intent Wednesday. Ruka received a full-ride scholarship to Northern Illinois, a Division 1 program. Ruka committed to Northern Illinois last summer after receiving several scholarship offers. Garner also made news last summer when she defended her WIAA State Track and Field title in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet last June. She will be on the Winona State track team next fall. In addition to Ruka, four more players off the football team that made the playoffs for the first time since 2002 will continue their playing days at the …
