Mermolia Now Man in Charge

He steps in as GHS boys basketball coach after Jim Nowak's surprising resignation.

Tears rolled down Malick Mohammad's face. Others just sat in silence not knowing what to think.   Shock, disbelief and a sense of sadness filled the Greenfield High School boys basketball team's locker room Dec. 17. These emotions didn't stem from the Hustlin' Hawks getting trounced by Milwaukee Northwest, 82-50, that evening. It was because Mohammad and his teammates were learning that Jim Nowak, their head coach, was resigning due to undisclosed health problems. "It was just shock really," said Mohammad, a senior and one of four co-captains. "It hit me right away. I started crying. A lot of the guys cried, and he gave each one of us a hug." Nowak, who has overcome bouts of testicular cancer in the past, led Greenfield to Woodland …
