Former Greenfield Wrestler Retires as MSOE Coach After 20 Years

Kevin Morin retired as the Milwaukee School of Engineering wrestling coach Friday. Only the second coach in the program's history, he started his tenure in 1993.

Since 1993, Kevin Morin has been the leader, communicator and educator of the Milwaukee School of Engineering wrestling program. But on Friday, the former Greenfield High School wrestler officially announced his retirement from coaching. Morin was only the second coach in the history of the MSOE wrestling program. In 20 years of coaching at MSOE, his athletes have succeeded both on the mat and in the classroom. Morin celebrated two NCAA All Americans, eight NCAA Championship Qualifiers, 28 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Academic All-Americans, and three College of Sports Information Directors Association (CoSida) Academic All-Americans. One Hawk Wrestler Making State Tournament Trek

Junior Tyler Dorfner pulled off a win in a second-place wrestleback Saturday to earn his first state tournament trip.

Greenfield High School junior Tyler Dorfner didn’t let two previous losses to Whitnall’s Ryan Olson phase him. In fact, his coach believes the 152-pounder used them to his advantage. Dorfner defeated the Whitnall sophomore, 7-5, in a second-place wrestleback at a sectional at Waukesha West on Saturday, and earned a spot in the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins Thursday. “Tyler felt that he had a shot when he arrived at Waukesha West,” Greenfield coach Chris Otto said. “He knew Connor Price from Muskego was going to be tough to beat and knew that he would more than likely have Ryan Olson from Whitnall in a wrestleback. “Tyler has worked hard all year and had some ups and downs. Six Hawks Survive Wrestling Regional

They'll compete in WIAA sectional at Waukesha West at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.

Two Hustlin’ Hawks wrestlers were runners-up at the WIAA regional at Greenfield High School on Saturday. Dylan Kumbera (20-22) scored a pair of victories at 126 pounds, including a 3-1 win over Nate Arquinego of Mukwonago in the second-place match. Kumbera also beat Waterford’s Nick Lancaster, 7-1, in a quarterfinal, before getting edged by Whitnall’s Blake Leslie, 2-0, in the semifinals. Greenfield’s 285-pounder Alex Morton (18-13) was also the runner-up in his respective weight class. Morton lost to Milwaukee Hamilton’s Martin Flemming, 10-3, in the final after scoring  a 3-1 semifinal win over New Berlin’s Ben Clark and a first-round bye. Local High School Swimmers, Wrestlers Set for Postseason

The Greenfield and Whitnall wrestling and swimming teams begin WIAA competition Saturday at Greenfield High School.

The WIAA swimming and wrestling postseason kicks off Saturday, and Greenfield High School will be at the center of attention. The school will host both the WIAA Division 1 swimming sectional meet and a D1 regional wrestling tournament. The swimming meet will be a strong test for the Greenfield-Greendale co-op boys swimming team, which despite winning eight of 12 events took second at the 10-team Woodland Conference meet Feb. 2, finishing behind the deeper Shorewood Greyhounds. PantherHawk winners were: The 11-team sectional is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Diving is at 6 p.m. Friday, also at Greenfield High School. New GHS Wrestling Coach Wants to Build on Tradition

Chris Otto is in his first season as the Greenfield High School wrestling coach, one of two new local varsity head coaches this winter.

Chris Otto is familiar with wrestling tradition. He wrestled from 1991-95 at West Allis Central, a school rich in wrestling history, and returned to be a varsity assistant coach from 2001-07, helping guide two individuals to state championships and another to a state runner-up effort while the Bulldogs were firmly established as the team to beat in the Greater Metro Conference. He’s also aware of the tradition built at Greenfield, where Otto is now in his first year as head coach of the Hustlin’ Hawks’ varsity wrestling program. “I want to put my own identity on it, but make sure there is a good mesh with what was established here.,” Otto said. “Why fix it if it’s not broken?” After last year, some could say the program is damaged, if not …

Greenfield seniors Andrew Krueger and Taylor Wirtz had their seasons come to an end Friday short of the medal stand at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. After losing his first tournament match Thursday afternoon, Krueger defeated DeForest junior Jack Jenkins, 7-3, in a 140-pound wrestleback match Friday morning. Needing one more win to assure himself a spot in the top six, however, Krueger fell to D.C. Everest senior Josh Dupuis, 8-5, the final match coached by longtime Greenfield coach Keith Morin. Greenfield Wrestling Coach Hanging it Up After 38 Years Coaching

State tournament is final chapter in Keith Morin's storied coaching career.

Even though he’s been at it for 46 years, Keith Morin still has a passion for wrestling. You can hear it in his voice, and you can see it in his eyes when he’s giving one of his pupils instruction, tips of knowledge he’s stockpiled from nearly five decades in the sport. But this weekend’s WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison, marks the end of Morin’s storied career. State Wrestling Tournament, Hoops League Title Game Highlight This Week's Events

Three local wrestlers will be competing in this weekend's state tournament in Madison and the Whitnall boys basketball team is shooting for a share of the conference title.

A busy week could be an exciting one for Whitnall and Greenfield high school sports. Three local wrestlers will be competing in the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins Thursday in Madison. At 103 pounds, Whitnall senior Kameron Bourgeois (44-1) will take on Manitowoc Lincoln freshman Zach Youngchild (41-2) at 3 p.m. The winner will take on Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln senior Jason Munoz (38-8) or Holmen freshman Darius Wright (36-6) later that evening. Bourgeois and Munoz are two of only three seniors and four upperclassmen in the 16-wrestler field.
