Each year, thousands of people in the Milwaukee area help fight hunger by donating food to the Hunger Task Force, and many then follow up by volunteering at Task Force headquarters to sort all that food. On Saturday morning, the bulk of about 30 volunteers who sorted 10 tons of food in less than three hours came from the Milwaukee Young Adult Ministry. Opportunities to help in those ways abound year-round. But not all of the nutritional needs of the hungry are met through direct donations of food. The Hunger Task Force also relies on cash donations to buy food to make up the needs of those it serves who visit more than 70 food pantries and kitchens in Milwaukee County. The club collected more than 31,000 pounds for the food bank.
While most look to shed pounds, especially with the start of the new year, the members of the Whitnall High School DECA club got busy gaining them. As in 31,076 pounds of food for the Hunger Task Force. The members were honored by the Whitnall School Board members on Monday for their efforts, which were reported in a story by Greenfield Patch last week.

And in doing so, the club won a SMART Board by donating the most food through the Hunger Task Force School Challenge.
Breaking a school record? Check. Winning a SMART Board? Check. Feeding the hungry? Check. The Whitnall High School DECA Club managed to do all three during a recent Hunger Task Force School Challenge donation campaign. The club, which set a goal to raise 30,000 pounds of food for the Hunger Task Force, collected 31,076 pounds, nearly three times as much as the runner-up’s total of 11,500 pounds. In the process, the club won a an interactive whiteboard system for the school and will be the Hunger Task Force’s first inductee into its hall of fame, according to the Hunger Task Force website. All Milwaukee County fire departments have partnered with the Hunger Task Force to help increase donations of the nutritious and kid-friendly food.
As the cost of peanut butter reached an all-time high in 2012, the Hunger Task Force's supply of the delicious, nutritious and kid-friendly food began running low. And while people across the county are willing to donate, getting to the Hunger Task Force food bank at 201 S. Hawley Court in Milwaukee during its hours of operation of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is not always an easy task. Enter: local fire departments. Whitnall Middle School students hoped to raise 10,000 pounds of food for the Hunger Task Force.
Before Super Sunday, there must be “Soup-er Friday.” Whitnall Middle School concluded its weeklong food drive for the Hunger Task Force on Friday morning with an event that turned into a mini Super Bowl prep rally. Students and teachers, nearly all clad in their Green Bay Packers gear, gathered in the cafeteria to collect the last of the donations and broke out into chants of “Go Pack, Go” for television cameras and news reporters. This is the third year the school has held the food drive. In 2009, the school collected 8,700 pounds of food and last year it collected 9,300.
