If you travel Interstate 43, you'll need to be aware of these closures. Here's what you need to know.
Several ramps along I-43 will close beginning Monday and will remain closed until at least July, according to officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Depending on the weather, officials plan to close a single-lane from Howard Avenue to the Marquette Interchange. According to the DOT press release: This closure will start at Howard Avenue and extend north each night, until it reaches the northernmost limit of the Valley Bridge. Motorists will experience the first wave of the closure on the morning of February 12, but should remain alert for the remainder of the week as the closure progresses. Changes that were part of the Mitchell Interchange project have drivers making illegal U-turns or using a small neighborhood street to correct their mistake of missing the ramps.
If you've missed the on-ramps for I-894 or I-43 while heading in either direction on 27th Street, you're not alone. Since the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reconstructed the ramps, motorists have been confused, and that confusion is leading to dangerous, illegal U-turns and congestion in a small neighborhood just off 27th Street. Motorists can now head either east or west from either side of 27th Street, but many are missing the ramps (see video) and try to correct their mistake by heading north on 27th and executing an illegal U-turn in the median break at Bottsford Avenue. A 26-year-old Nebraska woman is facing charges after she was caught allegedly driving the wrong way drunk on I-43 on Saturday. Christie Jo Ryker, of Bellevue, Neb., was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Wednesday with one count of second-degree reckless endangerment of safety. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: At 4:46 a.m. Saturday, two employees with Mega Rentals were inside the construction zone on I-43 between Calhoun Road and Martin Road when they spotted Ryker’s car parked facing eastbound in the westbound lanes of the expressway. A 57-year-old Greenfield man is facing felony drunk driving charges after he allegedly hit a wall while getting on I-43, then blew out a tire and continued to drive. Mark A. Ollenburg was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Tuesday with one count of sixth offense operating while intoxicated. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines. The 'digital chevron' system installed will be a first in the state.
Commuters, take note: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will implement a new technology in the Marquette Interchange from the I-94 eastbound ramp to northbound I-43 in starting July 12. The installation will close the right lane on I-94 eastbound between the 13th Street exit and the connector ramp to I-43 northbound from July 12-15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. While travel times may be longer, John Oimoen, manager with WisDOT, said the operation will ultimately improve operations and safety on our transportation network.” He also said “a new dynamic chevron system is a cost-effective way to help motorists stay alert and monitor their speeds in this area.” This system is the first of its kind in Wisconsin and WisDOT said benefits…
