POLL: What's the Most Patriotic Song in America?

From the "The Star-Spangled Banner" to "Yankee Doodle" and "Born in the USA," we want to know what makes you think "America."

It seems like nearly every big fireworks show is synced up to music these days, and for good reason. A good song can elicit strong feelings and memories, and that includes patriotic tunes most often played around the Fourth of July and other national holidays. But which song is the most patriotic? Is it our national anthem? God Bless America? Is it Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A.? Vote in our poll and share a favorite Fourth of July memory!

Just because a song ("Born in the USA") does not espouse a pro-war view, it does not disqualify itself as "patriotic." Does one have to be pro-war and anti-tax to be patriotic? Hardly.   more ›

Gov. Walker: Ordinary Citizens Risk Futures for Hope of a Better America

Gov. Scott Walker reflects on Independence Day this July 4.

Editor's Note: The following column was written by Gov. Scott Walker. The United States of America is arguably the greatest country in the history of the world because in times of crisis, whether it be economic, fiscal, or military, ordinary citizens have risked their futures with the hope that they could make our country better off for the next generation.  I was reminded of this when, not too long ago, I visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia for the first time in my life.  When I walked into the room and saw the chairs and desks that Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and others used to create our founding documents, it had a powerful impact on me.  When I was a student learning about our nation’s birth, I often thought of our …

Despite Conditions, City's Fireworks Appear Safe

Some areas to the north are considering postponing or canceling fireworks shows, but Greenfield Fire Chief Jon Cohn says it's far too early to make that decision.

Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary put his city on alert when he said the city might have to consider canceling or postponing fireworks earlier this week, but here in Greenfield, Fire Chief Jon Cohn said it’s far too soon to make any decisions about extinguishing plans for fireworks at Konkel Park on July 4. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s this week, and the entire region has seen little rainfall this month, leaving residential lawns and parks such as Konkel dry and dormant. But Cohn said canceling the fireworks hasn’t crossed his mind, yet. “It’s a big decision,” Cohn said. “The fire department signs the permit, so it’s our decision, but we’d take other people’s opinions under advisement. “Right now, we’re just keeping an eye…

I totally agree.... it seemed a bit unorganized as to who was up next and it took forever to get started... Also was upset to hear that some people were walking around, taking advantage of the weather and they were charging for water. Even though, I myself was given 4 bottles of FREE water from some of the other folks walking around, handing it out. Next yr, lets pray for 70's... ;)   more ›
