The Greenfield Police Department dog will work his last full shift this week with handler Sergeant Scott Zienkiewicz.
Several years ago, in the very early days of being a dog handler for the Greenfield Police Department, Scott Zienkiewicz would set up his patrol car on a busy Greenfield street, pull out his radar gun and wait to catch someone speeding. Occasionally, the stillness of waiting would be broken by a friendly paw poking Zienkiewicz’s arm or shoulder through the sliding window that separates the front and back seats, often times startling Zienkiewicz and reminding him that he was not alone. For the last 7 ½ years, Zienkiewicz has had Badger by his side. But this week, Badger is retiring, his last full shift being Tuesday evening. And Zienkiewicz will soon be manning his squad car without his trusted companion. “When (the retirement) got moved up…

Area businesses can sponsor a hole during the tournament, or donate a prize for the raffle held the day of the event.

Law enforcement officers from around southeastern Wisconsin will participate in the event, now in its 15th year. This year invitational will benefit the Greenfield Police K-9 Development Fund, according to Greenfield Police Capt. Jay Johnson. Since it was created in 1992, the K-9 unit relies heavily on private donations for funding the purchase and training of our K-9 officers. Area businesses can sponsor a hole during the tournament, or donate a prize for the raffle held the day of the event. For more information about how to donate to the event, or about the department…

Brian Dorow, associate dean of criminal justice program, says year-old facility in Pewaukee has allowed area law enforcement to have enhanced scenario-based training.
The criminal justice training center at Morris Street’s been getting strong reviews from area police officers just one year into the program. The Waukesha County Technical College training center moved into an old daycare a year ago. The 20,000-square-foot facility provides scenario-based training for police officers to get enhanced experience. His promotion, and those of several other staff members, were approved by the Police and Fire Commission on Dec. 6.
Paul Schlecht, a 27-year veteran, will be second in command at the Greenfield Police Department come Jan. 1. Schlecht's promotion from captain to assistant chief was approved by the Police and Fire Commission at the Law Enforcement Center on Tuesday. "Captain Schlecht has been an integral part of the department's re-organization," Police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. "He is very well-suited and positioned to move into the position of assistant chief." Schlecht, who will replace Inspector Mark Wildish, who is retiring later this year, joined the department in 1984 after serving as an intern with the Middleton Police Department. The department has two remaining sessions of its conceal carry class, which was profiled by FOX6 on Sunday.
Starting tomorrow, Nov. 1, Greenfield residents can walk the streets and into some buildings carrying concealed weapons. But there are still more questions than answers regarding the law that was signed months ago by Gov. Scott Walker, and the Greenfield Police Department hopes to clear up any confusion. The department offered two conceal carry classes last month and will hold two more Nov. 5 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The classes were profiled by FOX6 on Sunday, which included an interview with Lt. Jay Johnson. So far, the classes have been well-received by its participants according to Chief Brad Wentlandt, who shared an email from a West Allis couple who took the class with Greenfield Patch. One of them went to Lt. Jay Johnson, who was named the law enforcement training coordinator of the year.
The Greenfield Police Department received two significant awards in the last few days. Lt. Jay Johnson was named the 2011 Law Enforcement Training Coordinator of the Year by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training Officers Association. Johnson is the training coordinator for the department and the commander of its unified tactical training team, but that’s not all. According to Interim Chief Brad Wentlandt, Johnson has been the driving force behind expanding and increasing the frequency of the department’s training as well as the quality and realism of the training curriculum. He developed an innovative training regimen that puts officers in defensive tactical situations using Simunition-equipped firearms and realistic training environments…
