Former Whitnall Quarterback Joel Stave Listed as Badgers Co-Starter

The Wisconsin Badgers most recent depth chart lists Stave, a freshman, along with Danny O'Brien.

Whitnall football fans who remember Joel Stave and his rocket right arm leading the Falcons up and down the field in 2009 and 2010 might be able to relive those moments Saturday. Only this time, Stave will be wearing the red and white of the Wisconsin Badgers. Numerous news outlets reported Monday that Stave, a redshirt freshman, was listed as a co-starter at quarterback, along with Danny O'Brien, on the Badgers' official depth chart five days in advance of Wisconsin's nonconference match-up with Texas-El Paso. Stave completed 2 of 6 passes for 15 yards in relief of O'Brien in the second half of the Badgers 16-14 win over Utah State on Saturday. Afterward, he said he wasn't worried about who'd start the next game. Head coach Bret Bielema …

Former Whitnall Quarterback Currently Third on Badgers Depth Chart

His talent and another's injury have elevated him, but the team's preference is to have Joel Stave redshirt this fall.

According to multiple sources, the Wisconsin Badgers football coaching staff would prefer that former Whitnall quarterback Joel Stave redshirt this fall and maintain four years of eligibility while honing his skills. But according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Badger blog, Stave will likely enter Wisconsin's season-opener with Nevada-Las Vegas on Thursday in Madison as the team's third-string quarterback behind starter Russell Wilson and redshirt freshman Joe Brennan. Stave, presumably, would only play in an emergency in order for the Badgers to preserve his redshirt status. Stave was elevated to third on the depth chart thanks to redshirt sophomore Jon Budmayr's right hand injury, according to the blog post. A recent story on …

I agree, RJS. I covered his final two seasons at Whitnall and came away so impressed with not only the outstanding plays he made on the field, but the way he carried himself. I think the Badgers have a great talent in Joel.   more ›

Former Whitnall Star Quarterback Now Fourth on Badgers Depth Chart

The addition of North Carolina State's Russell Wilson pushes Joel Stave down a notch.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson, who passed and threw for 93 touchdowns, has decided to play football for the Wisconsin Badgers this fall. Wilson's decision means former Whitnall star Joel Stave, who graduated from Whitnall in December so he could begin taking classes in Madison, will likely be fourth on the depth chart. The true freshman finished the spring season behind redshirt sophomore Jon Budmayr and redshirt freshman Joe Brennan. In a story by the Associated Press that appeared on Sports Illustrated's website this afternoon regarding Wilson's decision, Stave was said to have appeared to be the sharpest of the young quarterbacks during the spring season but implied he was …
