The annual Memorial Day weekend event begins Friday.
If Dan Jansen Family Fest looks largely the same as it has in past years, that’s because organizers have decided not to mess with a good thing. The annual Memorial Day weekend festival at Konkel Park in Greenfield is in its 19th year and runs Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27. “We’re hoping people come out,” said Julie Rome, who has been on the Jansen Fest board for nine years and is now the board chair. “We’re expecting perfect weather, in the high 60s or low 70s.” A new band will hit the stage Saturday – Cherry Pie, a 1980s rock band – with return engagements from Rebel Grace on Friday and The Toys on Sunday. Russ Spahn, Cathy Walsh and Len Cich replace Rick Moze, Julie Rome and Audrey Ellison, and Bruce Bailey was reelected president of the Greenfield School Board on Monday.
The Greenfield School Board ushered in a new guard as three new members begin their terms Monday. Russ Spahn, Cathy Walsh and Len Cich were sworn in and gave brief remarks before the board began deliberating official business on its meeting agenda. "Together we are facing a huge task ... to give our students the best opportunity to compete in this unstable economy. I think with the additional help from parents and volunteers, we can achieve that goal," Cich said. "Failure to accomplish this is not an option." The Greenfield School Board race has a third candidate with the filing deadline quickly approaching.
UPDATED: 10:25 a.m. Jan. 3 There will be a shakeup on the Greenfield School Board where as of this week, the number of non-candidates equaled the number of candidates. Both Julie Rome and Audrey Ellison, two longtime board members up for re-election, have filed non-candidacy papers and will not seek another term. Rome, who has been a board member for the last 12 years, including nine as the board’s clerk, said it was a difficult decision, but a new job would have made it difficult for her to execute her duties as a School Board member Rome said helping the district build a new high school was one of her highlights as a board member, but the annual handing out of diplomas also ranked high. “It is something only other members will ever …

Three seats are up for grabs in the Spring 2012 election, and two candidates are unsure if they'll run again.
Three Greenfield School Board members are up for re-election this spring and two of them have not decided yet if they will run for another term. Incumbent Julie Rome, the board's clerk, recently accepted a new job and as a result was unsure if she could maintain her commitment to the school board position as of early this week. Audrey Ellison, who has been a board member for 16 years, was also undecided as of Wednesday. Incumbent Rick Moze, however, told Greenfield Patch he does plan to run again. As of Tuesday afternoon, no candidates had submitted their paperwork to the district, according to Erica Wendelberger, the district's executive assistant to the superintendent.
