The junior tallied a career-best 34 points against Greendale on Tuesday.
Ashley Markowiak picked a fine time to have a career night. The junior scored a career-high 34 points in front of a home crowd as the eighth-seeded Falcons toppled ninth-seeded Greendale, 60-52, in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal Tuesday. The win assured Whitnall (12-11) of a record of .500 or better and gave the Falcons two wins in three tries over the rival Panthers. Perhaps equally impressive as Markowiak's effort was the night teammate Lizzy Menden turned in. She scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter to key a comeback, and added five rebounds, six assists and seven steals. The Falcons trailed, 39-31, with 36 seconds left in the third quarter but went on a 20-2 run over the next 4 minutes to take a 51-41 lead with …

The Falcons defeated Wauwatosa West on Friday.
In a game that could help determine third place in the Woodland Conference Black Division, the Whitnall girls basketball team rode a fast start to a convincing win over Wauwatosa West at home Friday, Jan. 13. The host Falcons jumped out to a 20-8 first-quarter lead and remained consistent throughout in a 63-46 win over the Trojans that raised their overall record to 8-5 and their league mark to 5-4, a half-game better than Tosa West for third place. "It was a good way to go into exam week week with a good, solid performance," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. Whitnall's Ashley Markowiak set the tone with 21 points, Rachael Shulta added 15, including three 3-pointers and Elena Busalacchi had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Falcons are off…

Three of the four games were decided in the closing seconds.
It was a rough night for the local varsity basketball teams as all four teams lost Woodland Conference games, including the first loss of the season for the Whitnall boys. New Berlin West's Jordan McKeon knocked down a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to help give the host Vikings a 51-50 win over Whitnall, which had started the season 8-0. Stephen Pelkofer scored to lead the Falcons (8-1, 4-1). Meanwhile, at Whitnall, the girls basketball team suffered a 33-29 loss to visiting New Berlin West. Whitnall's Rachael Shulta converted a layup off a steal with less that 30 seconds left to close it to 31-29. The Vikings added two more, and with 11 seconds left, Whitnall missed a shot and a put-back attempt that fell short. "The girls played hard, …

Meanwhile, the Greenfield girls team picked up its first win of the season as well.
The streaking Whitnall girls basketball team continued its hot streak with a 43-25 road win over St. Francis on Friday, the Falcons third win of the week and fourth in a row. Whitnall’s Ashley Markowiak led all scorers with 15 points, Ann Marie Bay added nine and Elena Busalacchi had 10 rebounds, but a key to the game was Lizzy Menden’s defensive effort that helped limit St. Francis’ leading scorer, Amanda Scherbarth, to six points. "Lizzy’s contribution was huge,” Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. “She gave a solid, relentless effort on defense against one of the conferences top players.” Whitnall improved to 6-2 overall, 3-1 conference and New Berlin West (4-3, 3-2) on Friday. "West will be tough as they have their post player back who …

The boys and girls squads won Tuesday to improve to a combined 11-2.
Elena Busalacchi and Ashley Markowiak combined for 34 points as the Whitnall girls basketball team rolled to a 61-43 home win over Shorewood on Tuesday. Busalacchi led all players with 18 points, while Markowiak, the team's leading scorer at 14.7 points per game, had 16. The two players also pulled down six rebounds each. With the win, the Falcons improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Woodland Conference. "We were able to execute our half-court offense and also get some transition baskets from our defense," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. "I was pleased that we reduced our turnovers and fouls from our previous game." Meanwhile, at Shorewood, the Whitnall boys remained unbeaten (7-0 overall, 3-0 conference) with a 57-50 win. Stephen …

Season ends in regional quarterfinal with 53-50 loss at Catholic Memorial.
A furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short as the Whitnall girls basketball team's season ended with a 53-50 loss at Catholic Memorial on Tuesday in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal. The Falcons trailed, 45-34, to start the fourth quarter and, 51-39, with four minutes remaining before making it interesting. They held the Crusaders without a field goal in the fourth - all eight of Memorial's points came from the free-throw line - and had possession of the ball with 3 seconds to go. The inbounds pass, however, went out of bounds, leaving Whitnall with a season-ending 11-11 record. "The girls played hard but we came up short," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. "We needed another 30 seconds. Tough way to end the season but I'm…

Local schools in action in Division 2 regional quarterfinal games.
The Greenfield girls basketball team is hoping to follow the example set by the Whitnall boys last week. On Friday, the Falcons defeated rival New Berlin Eisenhower for the third time this season, the last of those victories coming in the WIAA postseason. Tonight, the Hustlin’ Hawks girls will be vying for their third win in three tries over boarder rival Greendale in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal. “In any sport at any level, playing and beating a team for a third time is always a difficult task,” Greenfield coach Rob Graetz said. “In the previous two match-ups throughout the season, the games were very physical and down to the closing minutes, and even seconds in the final match-up.” The Hawks beat the Panthers, 33-32, at home …

Whitnall handles visiting Greendale with ease as coach Keith Larson earns his 300th career win.
It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but it was pretty memorable. Whitnall girls basketball coach Keith Larson earned his 300th career victory as his Falcons dismantled visiting Greendale, 54-24, Friday. Larson, who has been coaching various levels of high school girls basketball since 1989, received an ovation from his players and fans following a postgame announcement over the public address system acknowledging the milestone victory. After speaking to a reporter and receiving congratulatory handshakes from fans and parents, he was also treated to a lockerroom full of cheering players. “It was a work in progress, each game and each season,” Larson said. “It makes you feel good that you endured, but to be able to do that you have to have good …

He and his Falcons will go for the milestone victory tonight against the Greendale Panthers.
Keith Larson has tried to approach every one of the 425 high school games he’s coached with one word in mind: consistency. Over 21 years, that has led Larson to a pair of varsity conference titles and an appearance in the WIAA girls basketball state tournament. And entering tonight’s showdown with Greendale at home at 7:30 p.m., that consistency has Larson, now in his 12th season as the Whitnall girls varsity coach, sitting one victory from the 300-career-win plateau. “As far as wins and losses, that just comes with a foundation and the belief in what you’re doing,” Larson said. “A lot of different factors go into getting 300 wins; your teams have to be good, you have to have talent and you have to have luck. “You have to change with the …

The Falcons defeat Wauwatosa West as coach inches closer to 300 career victories.
Whitnall girls basketball coach Keith Larson inched closer to his 300th career victory when the Falcons downed Wauwatosa West, 49-28, on the road Tuesday. The Falcons limited the Trojans to just nine second-half points after trailing, 19-18, at halftime. “We had a good second half after being down by one at half,” Larson said. “A few adjustments and more energy from the players was the difference. Rachael Shulta, Ann Marie Bay and Katherine Crivello all made significant contributions in the second half.” Crivello scored a team-high 12, Alyssa Moffatt added nine and Shulta chipped in eight as the Falcons improved to 7-7 overall and 5-6 in the Woodland Conference. West’s Paige Soles led all players with 15 points but none of her teammates …
