Alderwoman Lubotsky: 'No Doubt ... I Would Have Beat Mike'

First District Alderwoman Linda Lubotsky decided to challenge incumbent Michael Neitzke but two days later changed her mind. That didn't stop her from taking a few shots at him.

Alderwoman Linda Lubotsky took initial steps to run for mayor of Greenfield this week, filing papers Tuesday to challenge incumbent Michael Neitzke. Two days later, however, Lubotsky withdrew her name from the race. Had she stayed in, things would have gotten interesting, at least based on comments she made about Neitzke, who announced earlier this month he would be running for a third term in April. Lubotsky told Greenfield Patch via email she was offered a part-time job with a law office in New Berlin on Wednesday, a position she said she applied for a few weeks ago. “For a (part-time), job they will pay me over half what I'd make as mayor,” Lubotsky said. “I truly believe things happen for a reason. Mike will be happy I'm sure. He gets…

Three Alderpersons Sworn In; New President Selected

Alderpersons Karl Kastner, Shirley Saryan and Pam Akers officially started their new terms as Common Council members Tuesday.

Before selecting a new president, the Greenfield Common Council welcomed back three of its own. Karl Kastner, Pam Akers and Shirley Saryan, three alderpersons who ran unopposed in the April 3 election, were sworn in at a ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday before the Common Council’s regularly scheduled meeting. State Senator Mary Lazich, Milwaukee County Supervisor Mark Borkowski, several Greenfield department heads, Whitnall and Greenfield School Board members and dozens of others celebrated the event. Later, at the Common Council meeting, Alderman Thomas Pietrowski, who won re-election last spring, was voted the council’s president, taking the reins from Kastner. Pietrowski and Kastner nominated themselves for the position. “I think …

Greenfield Community Center Sign Gets New Life

By changing the definition of "public signs" the city created its own loophole to allow off-premises advertising in some instances.

For the better part of a year, Greenfield Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jaquish has been asked to get creative when it comes to making the city’s new Community Center run like a self-sufficient business. On Tuesday at City Hall, the city got a little creative itself to lend Jaquish a hand. The Common Council voted 4-1 in favor of amending the municipal code to define the term “public sign.” The decision was in response to Jaquish’s proposal to allow Clear Channel construct, install and pay for the upkeep of a monument-style electronic reader board sign outside the Community Center. In exchange for the sign, Clear Channel would enter into a 20-year lease with the city, agreeing to maintain the sign and pay approximately $12,000 per …

One out of seven or eight would work even better if that one "city" message is repeated after every four of the other messages. As far as revenue production, schools are doing it but not on street-side signs but signing in gymnasiums, baseball and softball fields for items the tax roll can no longer afford to finance.   more ›

Following Son's Drowning Death, Mother Wants High-Proof Alcohol Ban

Luanne Wielichowski has reached out to politicians at all levels in an effort to make alcohols such as Everclear, a 190-proof liquor, unavailable in Wisconsin. Luanne's son, Jeff, died last month after drinking Everclear mixed with energy drinks.

Jeff Wielichowski, 22, started drinking Tucker’s Death Mix—a concoction of 190-proof Everclear, Red Bull and Gatorade—at 8:30 p.m. July 15. Two hours later, his mother was performing CPR on him. Luanne Wielichowski urged her son to take it easy an hour before he drowned in the family pool while partying with friends. She remembers what he told her: “Don’t worry. I’m at home. I’m not driving. I’m OK.” Not long after, Wielichowski was at her son's side when she was alerted something was wrong. “I was his best bet that night,” she said. “As soon as someone got me, in a half-second, I was out there. I said ‘He’s breathless and pulseless. Someone call 911.’ … The problem was, the kids did not recognize the trouble he was in. Kids don’t …

Jeff was not drinking alone. Also when someone drinks a mix drink that includes everclear they don't understand how drunk they may become. I am a friend of Jeffs and find it crazy that people who dont know him or anything about the situation that ended his life make assumptions. Jeffs mom was a wonderful mother and he talked about her often. So all you DOUCH BAGS with negative comments about Jeff…   more ›

Entertainment Center Receives Common Council Approval

Halloween Express on 27th Street could soon be converted into a laser tag and go-kart facility.

Despite not knowing how late at night it might be open, the Greenfield Common Council approved the special use request from the owner of Halloween Express, 4251 S. 27th St., to convert his store into an entertainment center. John Majdoch's Greenfield location will soon be home to Lightspeed - High Energy Entertainment, which will feature indoor electric go-karts and lasar tag course after a 3-2 vote Tuesday night at City Hall. The council, however, learned of Majdoch's proposed hours of operation of noon to midnight seven days a week at the meeting, a cause for concern for Alderperson Linda Lubotsky, who said she’d hate to take action without consulting with the police department. “I think it’s a great idea,” she said. “We need more …
