Falcons Breeze Through Regional with Blowout Victory

The Whitnall boys basketball team had no trouble with New Berlin West, downing the Vikigns, 69-49.

If seniors Bryan Nagy and Stephen Pelkofer delivered a 1-2 punch that put the New Berlin West Vikings on their heels, it was Ian Ray who delivered the blow that turned out the Vikings’ light. Ray drilled three 3-pointers in a 2 ½-minute stretch in the third quarter to give the Falcons an insurmountable third-quarter lead in route to a 69-49 win over the Vikings at home in a WIAA Division 2 regional final. “He busted it open,” Whitnall coach Kent Kroupa said. “He created the separation that we needed. He makes those couple and West kind of goes, ‘Oh man, this is going to be an uphill climb.’” The top-seeded Falcons (22-2) advanced to Thursday’s sectional semifinal at Greenfield High School where they will play second-seeded Pius (21-3) at 7…

Whitnall's Pelkofer at Center of Balancing Act

The senior guard has helped the Falcons to 22 wins in 24 tries.

In typical Whitnall fashion, the Falcons boys basketball team relied on balance, balance and more balance as it disposed of ninth-seeded Catholic Memorial in a 78-63 WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal win at home Friday. And if the top-seeded Falcons are to do the same tonight in the final at home against New Berlin West – one of only two teams to beat Whitnall this season – the b-word will most likely play a significant role. (Update: The Falcons beat New Berlin West, 69-49, Saturday. Read the full game story here.) But every balance has a fulcrum, and during Whitnall’s amazing 2011-12 campaign, a season in which the Falcons have won 22 of 24 games, that fulcrum has been senior star guard Stephen Pelkofer. The Northern Michigan University…

Whitnall Hopes Historic Regular Season Carries Over to Tournament

The Falcons boys basketball team hosts Catholic Memorial at 7 p.m. Friday.

Kent Kroupa has been around the game of basketball long enough to collect more than 350 high school coaching victories, including in excess of 300 at Whitnall High School. He’s taken three of his teams to the state tournament and brought home the school’s only boys hoops title in 1988. But never has a Kroupa-coached team had as much success in the regular season as the 2011-12 Falcons, who begin the WIAA postseason Friday night after winning 20 of 22 contests over the first three-plus months of the season. “Any time you win 20 games it’s an exceptional season,” Kroupa said. “It definitely, realistically and honestly far exceeded any expectations I had. I knew we would have a good year. I knew we would be in contention with Eisenhower and …

Photos: Whitnall Falls to New Berlin Eisenhower, 28-14

Whitnall's offense couldn't make it happen against a tough Eisenhower defense.

It's never easy being the visiting team durning a homecoming game, a situation the Whitnall Falcons faced Friday night against the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions. Despite quarterback Luke Mentkowski's 309 passing yards and two touchdowns, the Falcons lost, 28-14, to fall to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the Woodland Conference Black Division.

Whitnall Edges Cudahy for First Football Victory

New starting quarterback Luke Mentkowski leads the Falcons to a narrow victory.

Senior quarterback Luke Mentkowski, making just his second varsity start of his career, and senior running back Travis Karweik carried the Whitnall Falcons to a 36-35 road victory at Cudahy in the season's Woodland Conference opener Friday. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online box score, Mentkowski completed 18 of 29 passes for 315 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. All three of his TD passes came in the first half, two of which went to his brother Sam Mentkowski and the third to Stephen Pelkofer as Whitnall carried a 22-21 lead into halftime. Karweik rushed for a game-high 188 yards and had a second-half touchdown.  The Falcons pulled even at 1-1 overall and will take their 1-0 league record into a league …

Whitnall's Football Season Opens With a Thud

The Falcons are shut out on the road in week one.

Where is the do-over button when you need it? The Whitnall Falcons opened the 2011 football season Friday with a 56-0 nonconference loss at Germantown on Friday. The host struck first with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter by running back Alec Richmond, which was all the scoring the Warhawks would need in coach Jake Davis's debut. Richmond would go on to have a fantastic night, carrying the ball 15 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns, adding one late in the second quarter and another early in the third. Germantown quarterback Josh Mongan struck early in the second quarter with a 5-yard pass to Louis Tuszynski, the first of his two touchdown passes. The Falcons did put together a nice little drive late in the second …

I think it will be long year. But there are more important things than wins and losses. Even if a team, in any sport, is not successful, athletics still help build basic skills. They can instill a work ethic, provide the value of learning to work with others and as a team. Athletics teach about sacrafice and can teach youngsters the value of wanting to improve. Sports can help preare student …   more ›
