Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some great ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of "Barbeque America" on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …

From touching tributes to rock bands, Greenfield offers a wide variety of Memorial Day weekend events. The city's Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Bicentennial Park, 5300 W. Layton Ave., at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 27. The event will feature a free lunch and a special awards ceremony that will have a surprise guest of honor. Other highlights will include the poem A Soldier Died Today read by former alderman Donald Almquist, a performance by the Pioneer Drum & Bugle Corps and a 21-gun salute and taps by American Legion Post 18. Also on Sunday, the new War Memorial in Hales Corners, will be dedicated during a day-long celebration. The event will feature a free lunch and a special awards ceremony that will have a surprise guest of honor. Other highlights will include the poem A Soldier Died Today read by former alderman Donald Almquist, a performance by the Pioneer Drum & Bugle Corps and a 21-gun salute and taps by American Legion Post 18. The Whitnall sophomore worked closely with World War II veteran Howard Hingiss to help raise $200,000 for a memorial in Hales Corners Park. It will be dedicated at a grand ceremony Sunday, May 27.

A fundraising effort spearheaded by a World War II veteran and a 15-year-old Eagle Scout and Whitnall High School student will culminate with a dedication ceremony at the stunning new Veterans Memorial in Hales Corners Park at 116th Street and Janesville Road this weekend. Thanks in large part to Mitchell McGlinn, a sophomore at WHS, the Hales Corners Veteran’s Memorial Committee raised $200,000 for the five-pointed star memorial, honoring the five branches of the United States military: Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force. The memorial is now complete and lined with memorial bricks of loved ones dating back to the Civil War to present day. The annual festival features three days of music, food and family entertainment. Mix in a car show and a fourth day of rides and you have one heck of a weekend.
The 18th annual Dan Jansen Family Fest runs May 25-27, with an amusement park ride special on Monday, May 28. All events are at Konkel Park. Proceeds from the festival benefit the City of Greenfield's Department of Parks and Recreation. This year's food vendors include: Anderson Corn; AV Concessions; Hawg City Grill; Lemon Chill; Olde Country Style Almonds; Rocky Rococo Pizza; Scardina Bakery; Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds and Yum - Yum Homemade Ice Cream. Most city services will not be available.
All of the offices within City Hall are closed Monday for Memorial Day. In addition, the Department of Public Works and the Greenfield Public Library are also closed, as are all Greenfield and Whitnall schools. All will re-open as scheduled Tuesday.
