Michelle Garner Makes Clearing Hurdles Look Easy

The Greenfield High School senior is believed to be the school's only three-time state champion in any sport after winning the 300-meter hurdles at the state track meet Saturday.

Some people enjoy the challenge of a figurative hurdle, something they have to get over mentally or professionally. Michelle Garner, a 5-foot-1-inch senior at Greenfield High School, prefers the literal kind. “The challenge of OK, now I have to get over something. How am I going to do this?,” Garner responded when asked what initially drew her to hurdling in seventh grade. “That’s what made it interesting, and you never see shorter hurdlers. It’s nice that I could show myself to other people.” Garner has made a habit of showing off her skills to people the last three springs, including Saturday, when she won the state championship in the 300-meter hurdles at the WIAA Division 1 State Meet in La Crosse. For Garner, who relied on her speed …

Michelle Garner Claims Third Straight State Track Title

The Greenfield High School senior claimed the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles Saturday.

The third time was a charm for Greenfield High School senior Michelle Garner. Just as the second and first times were. Garner, a Greenfield senior, won the 300-meter hurdles at the WIAA Division 1 State Track and Field Meet on Saturday in La Crosse. Her time of 43.69 seconds narrowly edged that of La Crosse Logan senior Amber Sanderson, who ran second in 43.75, the only sub-44-second time in the field. Garner, who also ran 17th in the 100 hurdles, won the 300s as a sophomore and junior in 2010 and 2011. There were two Whitnall competitors at the state meet. Whitnall junior Meredith Heller ran third in the 300 hurdles in 48.05. Whitnall senior Greg Stribling ran 21st in the 400 dash in 51.55.

Michelle Garner’s Quest for Three Straight Hurdle Championships Moves Forward

Whitnall's Meredith Heller and Greg Stribling also qualified for the state meet to be held June 1-2 in La Crosse.

Michelle Garner, the two-time defending state champion in the 300-meter, will have another shot at adding to her hardware collection next weekend. Competing in the WIAA Sectional at Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday, the Greenfield High School senior won the 300 hurdles in a stadium-record time of 44.47 seconds, outpacing Jenny Hagen of Piux XI, who was runner-up in 45.15, and Meredith Heller of Whitnall, who also qualified for state with a third-place time of 47.33. Garner has won the 300 at the state meet the last two years by narrow margins. She’ll get a third shot at the title when she competes June 1-2 in La Crosse. Garner also qualified for the state meet in the 100 hurdles, where she was third in 15.42 seconds, behind fellow seniors …

Greenfield's Ruka, Garner Lead Way on National Signing Day

Seven Greenfield High School athletes signed their national letters of intent at the school Wednesday.

Josh Ruka, one of the state's elite offensive linemen, and Michelle Garner, one of Wisconsin's best high school hurdlers, were among the Greenfield High School athletes to sign their national letters of intent Wednesday. Ruka received a full-ride scholarship to Northern Illinois, a Division 1 program. Ruka committed to Northern Illinois last summer after receiving several scholarship offers. Garner also made news last summer when she defended her WIAA State Track and Field title in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet last June. She will be on the Winona State track team next fall. In addition to Ruka, four more players off the football team that made the playoffs for the first time since 2002 will continue their playing days at the …

Greenfield's Garner Defends State Title in the Hurdles

Junior squeaks out close win in her top event.

La Crosse – Saturday was a day of polar opposites for Michelle Garner. The Greenfield track star, who specializes in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, started off the second day at the WIAA State Track Meet in La Crosse in frustrating fashion, finishing tenth in the 100 finals in 16.13 seconds after qualifying with the sixth-best time Friday. Turning all her attention to the 300 hurdles, where she was the defending champion, Garner turned in an eerily similar performance from the year before. In 2010, Garner edged out Racine Case's Maya Carter by four one-hundredths of a second to take the title. On Saturday, Garner and Carter were neck-and-neck down the stretch to the point where, when the race was over, neither knew who won. “I had no clue…

Whitnall Triple Jumper Second at State Meet

Rachel Stave headlines successful first day of the meet for Whitnall, Greenfield.

La Crosse – After a tight timetable hindered her performances at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet last year, Whitnall’s Rachel Stave wanted to rebound this year. If Friday was a sign of things to come, the sophomore will have quite the collection of medals by the time she graduates. Stave took home the silver medal in the triple jump at this year's state meet on Friday after landing a distance of 37 feet, 6 1/2 inches, nearly a foot farther than her qualifying mark. “It’s pretty amazing,” Stave said. “I wasn’t really expecting it and I’m pretty happy, excited. It was a ‘PR’ for me. “(Last year) I did pretty bad. I had to run my 400 and then go triple jump and I was really tired and I just jumped really bad. Today, the weather was really…

Track Teams Claim Multiple State Berths With Sectional Efforts

Greenfield, Whitnall athletes qualify in 12 events for next weeks season finale.

Greenfield junior Michelle Garner took another step toward defending her state title by qualifying for both hurdle events at the Mukwonago Sectional on Thursday. Garner, the reigning Division 1 champion in the 300-meter hurdles, won that event Thursday in 44.87 seconds. She also finished third in the 100 hurdles in 15.72. Garner was one of many local athletes to qualify for the WIAA State Track Meet, to be held June 3-4 in La Crosse, by finishing in the top three of their respective events. Whitnall’s Mary Erickson claimed a pair of individual state bids by winning the 800 run in 2:19.44 and the 1,600 in 5:32.10. Whitnall also picked up a win in the triple jump as Rachel Stave won with a distance of 36 feet-7 inches, five inches better …

State Track Hopefuls Slated for Sectional Competition Today

Greenfield, Whitnall athletes will be in Mukwonago with state berths on the line.

Many Greenfield and Whitnall athletes will find themselves in favorable situations at today’s WIAA sectional track meet in Mukwonago. The meet, which will feature athletes from Oak Creek, Muskego, Franklin, Wisconsin Lutheran and a host of others, including the two local schools, is slated for 4 p.m. Thursday. The top three finishers in each event earn an automatic berth to the WIAA state meet, held next weekend in La Crosse, and many Hustlin’ Hawks and Falcons are seeded in the top three of their respective fields. Leading the way is defending hurdle champion Michelle Garner of Greenfield, who is the top seed in both the 100-meter (15.98 seconds) and 300 (45.96) hurdles. Her 300 seed time is nearly a full second better than the next-…
