Area school districts have openings in a number of grade levels from the elementary level to the high school level. Some districts have more available seats than others. Whitnall School Board approved 80 new Open Enrollment seats for the 2013-14 school year Monday. A bulk of those seats will be available for incoming ninth-graders (20 new seats) and incoming sixth-graders (30). Neighboring district, Greenfield, approved 51 seats. With an eye on academic stability and evening out class sizes at the high and middle schools, the Whitnall School Board approved 80 new Open Enrollment seats for the 2013-14 school year Monday. A bulk of those seats will be available for incoming ninth-graders (20 new seats) and incoming sixth-graders (30). The district wants to average approximately 210 students per class at the high school, 168 at the middle school and 160 at the elementary schools, Superintendent Dr. Lowell Holtz said. The Greenfield School Board approved 51 new seats for the 2013-14 school year, after approving just 14 a year ago.
As many as 51 new students from outside the district could be in Greenfield classrooms during the 2013-14 school year after the Greenfield School Board approved that number of Open Enrollment seats Monday. The number figures to help maintain the district’s current staffing and program offerings, according to administration. School Board member Russ Spahn voted against allowing that many seats, citing concerns about class sizes becoming too large. Len Cich cast the board’s other dissenting vote. The Greendale School Board has approved adding students through the state's Open Enrollment program for the 2013-14 school year. The board approved 13 new seats at the sixth-grade level, three new seats at seventh grade and left open the possibility of additional seats at ninth grade. Districts throughout the area use choice program as funding mechanism.
The Greenfield School District is in the midst of an annual attempt to strike an enrollment balance through Wisconsin's inter-district open enrollment, a popular state-wide school choice program. Through an application process, open enrollment allows parents to choose the district they want their child to attend. Districts determination the number of open seats it has and selects students through a random process. Those incoming students bring with them a set state funding amount.
