Is Greenfield High School's Tardy Policy Working?

Principal Paul Thusius took an unusual step to curb the school's first-hour tardy problem in late March.

Principal Paul Thusius raised quite a few eyebrows in late March when he decided to take an unorthodox approach to Greenfield High School’s massive first-hour tardy problem. The results so far may raise a few more. It’s been nearly six weeks since Thusius determined any student tardy for his or her first-hour class would spend the entire hour in the school’s Performing Arts Center rather than be allowed to go to that class late. Through the end of April, since the new policy was put in place March 21, an average of 24.7 students have had an unexcused first-hour tardy. That’s down 285 percent from the average of 70.3 unexcused first tardies according to data compiled for approximately one month just prior to the new policy’s implementation…

Greenfield High School Combating Tardies with Unorthodox Policy

After 90 students were tardy for first hour on Wednesday, principal Paul Thusius decided it was time for a drastic change.

Greenfield High School principal Paul Thusius has taken an unorthodox measure in an effort to curb the school's first-hour tardy epidemic. On Thursday, Thusius implemented a new protocol that calls for all students that are tardy first hour to report to the Performing Arts Center. They remain there for the entire first hour and are not allowed to eat or drink. They can’t text or talk and can’t listen to music. They are there to reflect on being late, Thusius said, and do homework, if they wish. Tardiness has been a huge problem at Greenfield High School in the six years since the school start time switched to 7:10 a.m. The high school had 9,671 instances of first-hour tardies during 2011-12, up from 8,591 in 2010-11. The high school had 7,…

My son is in first grade at a private school. We recently received notice that the school is cracking down as well. Their policy includes a variety of things including 4th tardy is after school detention. I thought that was harsh, but you have to prepare kids for the reality of the real world. It drives me nuts all the people that can't get their butts to work on time at my office.   more ›

Greenfield High School Joins the 'Movember Movement'

The mustache-centered movement will raise awareness and funds in support of men's health issues during the month of November.

Greenfield High School students and staff are focusing on men’s health issues during the month of "Movember," otherwise known as Mustache November. To build community, have fun, and raise funds for men’s cancer research and awareness outreach, the school community has decided to be part of the “Movember Movement” that started in Australia almost 10 years ago. A number of staff members and students are going to be part of the “Mo Hawks Team” that will host some fun events during the month, culminating in a wearing of the mustaches Nov. 21. Principal Paul Thusius has pledged to grow a moustache for 30 days to raise awareness and funds for men's health. “This year we pay respect to the simple truth: knowledge is power - moustache is king,” …

Photos: GHS Students Get Dose of Reality at Mock Crash

During a mock crash demonstration on the Greenfield High School football field, juniors and seniors witness the consequences of texting, drinking and driving.

Greenfield High School juniors and seniors learned a graphic lesson about the devastating consequence of drinking and driving Tuesday morning. Students witnessed a reenactment of a drunk-driving and texting accident that occured after a football game. Left in the wake of the accident was death, severe injuries and a 17-year-old drunk driver facing prison time. The realistic reenactment took place on the high school's football field shortly after 9 a.m. and featured Greenfield police officers and firefighters, a Flight for Life Helicopter, rescue equipment and student actors Kyle Hanneken, Courtney Corroa, Wally Uriarte, Rubin Tate, Brayden Campagna and Amee Vang. "Homecoming is coming up soon and we want our students to be intimately aware…

High School Principal Suggests Altering School's Schedule

Times of classes, lunch times and homeroom periods may be adjusted to provide additional support time.

Just a few minutes a day can go a long way. That's what the new Greenfield School Board heard Monday during a presentation by Greenfield High School principal Paul Thusius, who described a proposed change to the high school schedule for the 2012-13 school year. Start and end times of classes, lunch times and homeroom periods would be adjusted by a couple of minutes in order to carve out time to provide additional support outside of the classroom.   "We want to provide a much more flexible intervention period during the school day," Thusius said. "Currently the high school schedule and the way we earn credits in the high school makes it a very rigid situation."  The extra flexible time will be used as time for students to seek academic help…

Greenfield High School Considering Weekend Graduation

In recent years, the high school has been holding its commencement ceremony on the final day of exams, typically a Wednesday.

Updated Dec. 1: The Greenfield School District announced Dec. 1 it has set its Greenfield High School graduation date as Saturday, June 9. In an effort to make graduation more convenient for students, families and staff, the Greenfield School District is considering moving its high school commencement ceremony to a Saturday. The high school has traditionally held graduation on a Wednesday, the last day of final exams. But the mid-week ceremony causes issues, according to first-year Greenfield High School principal Paul Thusius. “There are many, many bonuses in making this move and really no drawbacks,” Thusius said. The most substantial problem now is determining student eligibility for graduation. The final exam of the semester ends at 11…

Greenfield High School's New Principal Has High Expectations

Paul Thusius is now in charge after three years as an associate principal at Wauwatosa West.

Making all kids who walk out of Greenfield High School with a diploma “college ready” is one of Paul Thusius’s many goals in his new position as the high school’s principal. And to do that, Thusius hopes to continually challenge students by adding more college preparatory and Advanced Placement classes to the curriculum in the coming years. “We raise the bar, bottom line,” Thusius said. “Kids that go into the military should be college ready. Kids going right into a business should be college ready. Kids going into a two-year school should be college ready. “The days of multiple jobs in manufacturing or the trades are shrinking. Part of that is because of the current economy and part of it is because those jobs are going elsewhere. How do …

Honestly he isn't a good principal. Some of the rules he has is not right. Sitting down all through lunch with not enough tables for all of us atleast 700 students. When the cafeteria is only suppost to have 600ish. Then when we ask where we should sit when it's all filled up he says on the ground? Thats unstanitary and no high school student wants to eat their lunch sitting on the ground. We sit…   more ›
