Philippine Center, Free Medical Clinic Enjoying Early Success

Since March 2012, the center and clinic have turned the underutilized Zablocki Park Pavilion into a functional commodity.

Since celebrating its grand opening last summer, the Philippine Community Center and free medical clinic in the Zablocki Park Pavilion has brought new life to the park. And on Monday, organizers decided it was time to show off a little bit. Gerry Ramos, Executive Director of the Philippine Cultural and Civic Center Foundation and the center’s director, along with his team of volunteers, hosted elected officials and members of the community for an informal open house to highlight the center and clinic’s successes of the last 12 months. The clinic opened in March 2012, and the Philippine Community Center three months later. The center is home of exercise and cooking classes and workshops for children now, and Ramos hopes to expand on the …

Park's Baseball Field Improvements Approved

Zablocki Park will experience an expensive upgrade thanks in part to a donation former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder.

Despite opposition by those who felt the money could be better spent, the Milwaukee County Board approved a plan to upgrade Zablocki Park's baseball diamonds this week. The board voted to use $220,000 of community development block grant money for the project, money that was to be used for other community-based programs. In addition, $40,000 comes as a donation by former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. The improvements will continue the revitalization of the park. Over the last several months, the pavilion has been renovated to make way for a Philippine Community Center and free medical clinic, which opened last Saturday.

More Improvements Could be Coming to Zablocki Park

A proposal to upgrade the park's baseball fields is on the table, but where the funds are coming from have several people questioning the improvements.

Thanks to the not-for-profit Philippine Community Center and free medical clinic, the Zablocki Park pavilion has gotten a facelift both inside and out. A proposal in front of a Milwaukee County Board committee could extend the park's improvements to a pair of baseball fields. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the committee is considering using nearly $200,000 of federal community development block grant money originally designated for other programs on the project. The potential shifting of that money has drawn the ire of opponents of the project, which has a price tag of $275,000. A donation of $40,000 by former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder would cover some of it. After several months of renovations, the free …

Greenfield's New Philippine Center Steadily Moving Foward

The center hopes to open its free clinic Jan. 14.

Renovations of the Zablocki Park pavilion continue to progress as its new tenants eye a mid-January grand opening. Work began on the pavilion in late October, converting the seldom-used building into a Philippine Center, a cultural and civic center and a free health clinic. “Right now we’re raising funds for construction and retrofitting of the center,” said Gerry Ramos, the center’s executive director. Construction crews – a mix of volunteer and paid workers – knocked down several walls throughout the center to make way for the medical clinic which will be open two Saturdays every month. Ramos hopes enough construction is done to open the clinic Jan. 14. The center is installing a new heating and air conditioning system, replacing windows…

Philippine Community Center will be First of its Kind in Wisconsin

The center and a free medical clinic will be opening in the Zablocki Park Pavilion starting this winter.

Some people dedicate enormous amounts of time and resources to a project and let out a huge sigh of relief when it is finally completed.  As of Tuesday, Romulo “Gerry” Ramos was finally allowed to exhale. Ramos, Executive Director of the Philippine Cultural and Civic Center Foundation (PCCCF) in Milwaukee, has been trying to find a home for a Philippine Community Center and free medical clinic for more than a decade, and now has one right here in Greenfield. On Tuesday, the Greenfield Common Council approved the site, building and landscaping review for the center and clinic, both of which will open in renovated portions of the underutilized Zablocki Park Pavilion of the Milwaukee County Parks system. “It’s been awhile since we started …
