Santiago Reaches 1,000 Points, But Hawks Fall to Falcons

The Whitnall boys basketball team pulled out a 78-74 overtime win at Greenfield High School in the Woodland Conference finale Tuesday.

Ricky Santiago made school history Tuesday, but it was Danny Weymier and the Whitnall Falcons that had the last laugh. Weymier scored a game-high 34 points as the Falcons knocked off the host Hustlin' Hawks, 78-74, in overtime at Greenfield High School on Tuesday. Santiago scored a team-high 25 points. He needed just 11 to become only the third player in school history to reach 1,000 in his career. With the win, the Falcons improved to 14-7 overall in Steve Kujawa's first season as head coach, and 12-6 in the Woodland Conference East, good for second place behind Brown Deer (16-1). Hustlin' Hawk on Verge of Reaching Rare Air

Senior guard Ricky Santiago could become just the third boys basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points when the Hawks host Whitnall on Tuesday.

Hundreds of basketball players have laced up their kicks and stepped out on the court for the Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks basketball team. Only two have done what senior guard Ricky Santiago is on the verge of doing. With 18 points in a 86-60 loss to Brown Deer on Friday, Santiago moved into third place on the school’s all-time leading scorers list. He now is just 11 points shy of 1,000 in his career and could reach the mark when the Hawks host crosstown rival Whitnall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. “It’s honestly shocking,” said Santiago, whose 989 career points place him behind only Pete Binelas’s school-record 1,250 and Nick Smith’s 1,156. “I didn’t really plan to do this.
