Athletic directors and coaches have been scrambling all spring to get in matches, games and tournaments. The same can be said for Greenfield's park and rec department.
Scott Otto has the The Weather Channel’s website bookmarked on his desktop and checks it repeatedly throughout the day. The Greenfield High School athletic director and assistant principal has got the district’s grounds keeper, the city’s Park and Recreation Department, and the district’s facilities coordinator Stuart Wilke on speed-dial. And Otto has been in constant contact with his high school spring coaches and other athletic directors, all of whom, thanks to this spring’s persistence rainfall, have been forced to coordinate and orchestrate a complex schedule-juggling performance unlike many others. “It’s been a nightmare,” Otto said. “I’ve talked to other ADs in the conference and coaches that have coached 25 or 30 years and none of …

Whitnall is zeroing in on its first conference title in 12 years, while Greenfield still has a shot at making the playoffs for the second straight season.
The WIAA football playoffs don’t officially begin for another three weeks. Just don’t tell that to either the Greenfield or Whitnall players or coaches. The sixth week of the regular season is here, and so are games with a playoff-like feel. The Whitnall Falcons, who visit Brown Deer at 7 p.m. Friday, find themselves on the verge of their first conference title since 2000. With two Woodland Conference East Division games remaining (they also host Cudahy on Oct. 5), Whitnall is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in division games, one game ahead of three teams, including Brown Deer. The 12-year drought is something the Falcons have been focused on all week, first-year head coach Jeff Wallack said Thursday. Players have been doing everything in 12s, like …

The Falcons received big plays from seniors Sam Mentkowski and Zach Sutton en route to a 19-6 win over winless Greenfield.
Updated 11:15 p.m. There were fireworks. There was a video message from former Wisconsin Badgers coach Barry Alvarez. Heck, there was even a rainbow. But what made an evening when the Whitnall School District celebrated the grand opening of its $6.5 million, state of the art football stadium perfect was that the Falcons walked off the field with a win. Whitnall (2-1) christened its new athletic facility with a 19-6 victory over crosstown rival Greenfield (0-3) Friday night, rebounding from a lopsided loss to Wauwatosa West one week earlier and accentuating the debut of Falcon Field in style. "It was a tremendous amount of pressure this week. It’s a monkey off our back," first-year Whitnall coach Jeff Wallack said. "It’s one of the greatest…

Last fall, the Hustlin' Hawks made the WIAA postseason for the first time since 2002. Now, coach Scott Otto and his players want to win the school's first league title in more than three decades.
The Greenfield football team snapped one of the longest playoff droughts in the Patch area last fall when they went 5-5 and competed in the WIAA postseason for the first time since 2002. That playoff appearance has energized the program, according to third-year coach Scott Otto, who said one of the program’s main goals now is to win a conference title for the first time in more than 30 years. If the Hawks accomplish that goal, they’ll be doing it while grouped with Whitnall, Cudahy, St. Francis, Brown Deer and South Milwaukee in one division of the Woodland Conference, a league that added Milwaukee Pius and said good-bye to St. Thomas More during the offseason. All games 7 p.m. Aug. 17: at Mukwonago (Scrimmage - 6 p.m.) Aug. 24: vs. …

More than three dozen players participated in the Greenfield High School youth football camp, which ends Friday, July 13.
More than three dozen youth football players participated in the Greenfield High School youth football camp this week. According to high school head coach Scott Otto, approximately 120 kids have participated in camp over the past three years and that close to 20 varsity players volunteered to help this year as a way of giving back to the program.

Hawks' first playoff appearance in nine years is a short, but important one.
The 2011 Greenfield football season was all about making it to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Mission accomplished. As future teams return to the WIAA postseason, as second-year coach Scott Otto fully expects his program to do, building on this year’s foundation will be essential. The Hustlin’ Hawks’ first playoff game in nine years was a lopsided, 42-7 blowout in favor of third-seeded host Waterford (9-1) on Friday, but it was just a stepping stone. “You can’t make the mistakes we made, but a lot of that is predicated upon that we haven’t been here in nine years,” Otto said. “It’s something you have to get used to and unfortunately, the only way you get used to it is getting back here year after year after year. “Our senior …
The Hustlin' Hawks will take on Waterford at 7 p.m. Friday.
It's been nine years since the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks football team has been in the WIAA playoffs. But the drought ends at 7 p.m. Friday when the Hawks (5-4, 5-3) visit third-seeded Waterford (8-1, 6-1) in the first round of the Division 2 postseason. Waterford used a balanced offense this fall but relies heavily on getting the ball into the hands of running back Greg Steffens. Steffens led the team with 759 rushing yards on 97 carries with 12 touchdowns. Running back Jordan Underly added 604 yards with four touchdowns on the ground. In addition, quarterback Zach Fisher completed 38 of 52 passes (73.1 percent) for 830 yards with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 11-to-1. Waterford's offensive balance is a far cry from Greenfield's …

A judge filed a temporary injunction preventing the WIAA from releasing its Division 1 and 2 football brackets while the fate of co-op Shorewood/Messmer is decided.
UPDATE: According to Wissports.net, the WIAA has ruled that Shorewood/Messmer is eligible for the WIAA playoffs. Greenfield and several other Patch-area high school football teams are still in the dark when it comes to the WIAA postseason as they await a judge's ruling in regards to the eligibility of the Shorewood/Messmer co-op. The teams were supposed to find out Saturday, the day the WIAA was to announce its postseason pairings for all seven divisions. But on Friday, a judge granted Shorewood/Messmer a temporary injunction against the WIAA, keeping them from releasing the Division 1 and 2 brackets until the co-op's fate is decided. On Monday, a judge allowed the release of Divisions 3-7, but several Patch teams have qualified for either…

Greenfield has already qualified but can lock up a berth with a win while Whitnall is fighting for its playoff life against Pewaukee.
Greenfield football coach Scott Otto is pretty sure his players understand the significance of tonight’s regular season finale with New Berlin West. But it’s been so long he can’t be certain. At 4-3 in the Woodland Conference (4-4 overall), the Hustlin’ Hawks have already qualified for the WIAA playoffs thanks to their guaranteed .500-or-better record in league play. But a win tonight would ensure the team its first WIAA playoff berth since 2002. "When you tell them it’s been nine years, it’s almost been so long they don’t have anything to compare it to," Otto said. "It’s a big deal for our kids, but when you haven’t experienced something, you don’t know what you’re missing." With a win over the struggling Vikings at 7 p.m. at home tonight…

The Hustlin' Hawks are playing for first place when they host Greendale on Friday. And the Whitnall Falcons are trying to keep pace with the league leaders when they visit New Berlin Eisenhower.
It has been eight years since the Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks football team has defeated the rival Greendale Panthers. It has been even longer since the Hawks have played in a game with conference-title implications this late in the season. Should the Hawks, winners of five of their last seven games dating back to last season, accomplish the former at 7 p.m. Friday at home, they’ll pull themselves into a first-place tie with the Panthers with just three games remaining. “I’m exited for the kids that this late in the year they are playing in a game with this much significance,” Greenfield coach Scott Otto said. “It’s been a long time.” Be sure to check out our photo galleries from the Greenfield-Greendale and Whitnall-New Berlin Eisenhower …
