The Whitnall School Board gave senior Clayton Anderson the go-ahead to continue to build on his disc golf course plan he presented to them earlier this month.
A proposal by Whitnall senior Clayton Anderson and the district Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Matt Karshna to develop a disc golf course on district land moved ahead Monday. The Whitnall School Board voted unanimously to allow Anderson to pursue funding for the plan to build a course in the district’s Nature Pod, and for him to work with Karshna to help build upon a concept for the course he presented to the board earlier this month. “Once we develop a scope of work and contact the appropriate stakeholders, we’ll move the project to the next step,” Karshna said. “I needed to know that the board supported the idea and they do.” Karshna said Anderson, son of Whitnall School Board member TJ Anderson, will be largely in charge of coming up …

Whitnall High School senior Clayton Anderson wants to turn the district's Nature Pod into a free disc golf course and believes it will attract people to the community.
Greenfield disc golf fans soon could have their own course right here within the city. Whitnall High School senior Clayton Anderson, the student senate treasurer and son of School Board member TJ Anderson, wants to turn the district’s Nature Pod into a 9- to 12-hole disc golf course possibly as soon as next spring. Clayton Anderson, with the help of the district’s buildings and grounds supervisor Matt Karshna, made the initial pitch for his proposal to board members Monday. Clayton Anderson told board members there are approximately 3,000 disc golf courses in the country with more than 160 in Wisconsin. Locally, there are approximately 20, the closest being in New Berlin at Valley View Park. Course holes in the Nature Pod would be anywhere…

The School Board unanimously passed an amendment put forth by Board member TJ Anderson that incorporates early release and late start times for the three school levels.
While slowly putting both fists up in the air and quietly saying, “Yes,” Whitnall School Board member TJ Anderson let out what could have been considered a collective sigh of relief. Two weeks after learning the results of a district-wide survey that polled parents on their preferences, Anderson’s amendment put an end of 4 ½ months of back and forth deliberation and hours of conversations. The amendment passed unanimously on Monday night. The amendment aligned all the collaborative times on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, with the following impact on each grade level. “Yes, we know what the survey results are, but the key to this is the principals and administrators,” Anderson said. “Each principal laid out what they wanted…

The parade was Friday afternoon prior to the school's pep rally and football game.
The Whitnall High School's homecoming courts, the varsity fall sports teams and even School Board president TJ Anderson and Superintendent Lowell Holtz participated in the homecoming parade Friday afternoon. The parade left Hales Corners Elementary School at approximately 1 p.m. and traveled down 116th Street to the high school, where the student body participated in a prep rally. The Friday homecoming festivities were subdued a bit, however, when the varsity football team fell to South Milwaukee, 28-14, to fall to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the Woodland Conference, according to a story by NOW Newspapers. The Falcons now must win their regular season finale, a 7 p.m. home contest with Pewaukee (5-2, 5-1) Oct. 14, to qualify for the WIAA …

The budget was approved at the district's annual meeting Monday, and in other business, school board members were given a slight raise.
With the approval of the Whitnall School District’s 2011-12 budget at the annual meeting Monday, property owners within the district are slated to pay slightly less in taxes to the district. With the drop in the mill rate from $10.30 last fiscal year to $9.75 this year, and a minus-5.31 percent decrease in the tax levy from $16,500,387 to $15,623,744, an owner of a $200,000 property will pay $110 less in taxes. The final levy can be adjusted by Nov. 1 by the school board based on final property values, changes to state aid and the total number of students enrolled in the district as of the third Friday of the school year, according to interim business manager Doug Johnson. “We think this budget is a responsible budget that meets the needs …

The board agrees to use a large chunk of fund balance to wipe out debt.
In an early morning special meeting of the Whitnall School Board last week, the board decided to make a financial move that will leave them nearly debt free for several years. The board decided Sept. 7, the same day it approved the district’s 2011-12 preliminary budget, to use fund balance to pay down existing debt by the end of the year, with the exception of one outstanding small bond, according to interim business manager Doug Johnson, who addressed the issue at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. “The district will be debt free,” Johnson said, “which will give us room under the revenue caps and additional money for spending on educational programs rather than on debt.” According to Johnson, $8.3 million of the projected $12 million …

The district discussed options to address its surplus Monday night in advance of its Sept. 26 annual budget meeting.
The Whitnall School Board asked administration to factor a debt repayment through defeasance into its new budget at its meeting Monday night, a move that could use a projected $2.3 million surplus to further strengthen the district’s finances. The option was one of several considered at a special board meeting called to address the surplus in advance of the board’s 2011-2012 budget meeting Sept. 26. The district finds itself in a “pretty incredible position” relative to other districts in the state, according to board member and finance committee chair T.J. Anderson. The district accumulated a fund balance of $10.75 million through the 2010-2011 school year. That amount was projected to reach $12.3 million next year, which would represent …

Martino's Hot Dogs and Italian Beef has been a Milwaukee mainstay for more than 30 years.
With more than 125 items on the menu, mostly Chicago staples such as hot dogs and Italian beef and sausages, Martino’s Hot Dogs & Italian Beef has been a popular restaurant on the south side of Milwaukee for more than 30 years. Thanks to a few minutes of on-air publicity, owner TJ Anderson is expecting that popularity to go through the roof. Martino’s, located just blocks east of Greenfield at 1215 W. Layton Ave., was featured on The Travel Channel’s Man v. Food Nation on Wednesday evening. In the show host Adam Richman travels to a city, profiles one or two small, family-owned hot spots and then finds a local competitive eater who takes on a food challenge. Anderson’s Martino’s was the first restaurant profiled in Wednesday’s show. “It …
