Local Teams Are Done, But Football Postseason Heating Up

The Whitnall football team lasted just one game in the postseason, and Greenfield failed to qualify. But plenty of good teams from the area, including Greendale, are in action this weekend.

Whitnall Football Season Comes to an End

The Falcons were overwhelmed in the first half of a 63-26 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran in a first-round playoff game Friday.

The Whitnall football team's magical season — one that included a Woodland Conference title and the opening of Falcon Field — came to an abrupt end Friday. The Falcons (5-4) were outscored by 53 points in the first half en route to a 63-26 loss to top-seeded and undefeated Wisconsin Lutheran (9-0) in a WIAA Division 3 first-round playoff game. Adihia Bell rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns for Wisco. For the Falcons, the terrific tandem of senior quarterback Zach Sutton and senior receiver Sam Mentkowski was impressive in a losing effort. Sutton threw for 387 yards on 36-of-64 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Mentkowski caught a career-high 16 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown.

VIDEO: Playoff Berth Adds to Falcons' Memorable Season

The Whitnall football team also claimed a share of its first league title since 2000 and opened the brand new Falcon Field.

In what has been an incredibly memorable first season as head coach of the Whitnall football program, Jeff Wallack believes one moment stands out more than the rest: The opening of Falcon Field. “Opening up this place against rival Greenfield, I felt we could have played better offensively, but we’ll take that win,” Wallack told Patch on Wednesday. “It was a real surreal moment with the fireworks going off in the background.” The Falcons won that game, 19-6, back in week three of the regular season. Since then, they secured a WIAA Division 3 playoff berth and locked up a share of the Woodland Conference East Division title, the school’s first championship since 2000. “I remember when you guys came to talk to us in August, the big thing was…

Whitnall to Face Wisconsin Lutheran in Level 1 Playoff Game Friday

The Whitnall football team is back in the WIAA postseason after a one-year hiatus.

The Whitnall Falcons, who did not qualify for the postseason in 2011, will take on top-seeded and undefeated Wisconsin Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday in a Level 1 WIAA Division 3 playoff game. Wisco went 8-0 during the regular season, including 7-0 in the Wisconsin Little Ten. Wisco has been to the WIAA every season since 2000 and won three straight titles from 2005-07. The team was the D3 runner-up last fall. The Falcons, seeded eight, finished the regular season 5-3, and were tri-Woodland Conference East Division champions, along with Brown Deer and South Milwaukee. The winner of Friday’s game will play fifth-seeded Jefferson or fourth-seeded East Troy the following weekend in Level 2 action. Seventeen schools within the Milwaukee Patch area …

Anyone who has been around the Woodland long enough knows what WISCO always seems to do. Even the powerhouse teams like Greendale, Pewaukee, and Eisenhower couldn't touch them. Greendale came the closest to beating them 3 years ago. From what I've seen of WISCO this year, they are loaded for bear and this could get very ugly!   more ›

Falcons Unconventionally Share Woodland Title

Despite losing in the regular season finale to New Berlin West, Whitnall held onto to a share of the Woodland East in what turned out to be a three-way tie.

Well, it’s not exactly like the Whitnall Falcons drew it up, but when you wait 12 years for a conference title, you’ll take a piece of the crown any way you can get it. Even if you lose in wild, wild fashion. And even if you have to share the title with three other teams. Both happened to the Falcons on Friday. Whitnall finished the regular season 5-3 after a 56-42 shootout loss to New Berlin West on Friday, but thanks to Greendale’s 42-0 win over visiting Brown Deer, Whitnall remained tied atop the Woodland Conference East Division standings along with Brown Deer. Meanwhile, the South Milwaukee Rockets defeated New Berlin Eisenhower, 21-16, Friday to work their way into a three-way tie with Brown Deer and Whitnall. It’s the Rockets first …

Whitnall Has Not Clinched Football Title ... Yet

But the Falcons can determine their own fate: win, and conference title drought ends at 12 years.

The Whitnall football team is on the verge of its first Woodland Conference title in 12 years, and the Falcons could see that it happens with a win over New Berlin West on the road Friday. The Falcons have not, however, already clinched a share of the title, as Greenfield Patch erroneously reported last week. Due to incorrect information provided to Patch, this publication said the Falcons clinched a share of the Woodland Conference East Division title with their win over Cudahy on Friday. The win pushed Whitnall to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in division games, the same record as East Division co-leader Brown Deer. Patch called Whitnall and Brown Deer co-champs because each team’s final regular season game is against a West Division foe (Brown …

WIAA Playoffs: Is Your Team In, Out or on the Fence?

Most high school football teams learned their playoff fates Friday, but a few teams are still fighting for a postseason berth when the regular season ends this weekend.

With just one week remaining in the regular season, almost every high school football team in the Milwaukee Patch area knows its postseason fate. Almost every team. Muskego, Racine Horlick, Greendale, Martin Luther and Brookfield Academy all can lock up playoff berths with victories Friday, but losses would either eliminate them from contention or significantly hurt their chances. In the third edition of Patch’s Postseason Possibilities, we take another look at each high school team in the Milwaukee Patch area and break down its playoff chances. Records and scenarios are updated as of Oct. 7. Look for an update to include next weekend’s games by noon Oct. 15. (To get in, a team needs four or more league wins.) In for sure Waukesha West (3-…

It's great to see Whitnall have a exciting high powered offense with Sutton at quater back and Mentkowski at wide receiver.   more ›

Not a Good Night for Whitnall, Greenfield Football Teams

Both teams suffered losses on Friday, hurting the Falcons' chances at winning the league title and the Hawks' chances at earning a playoff berth.

The Whitnall and Greenfield football teams came into Friday night with two very different, but distinct goals. Neither of them were able to accomplish them. The Whitnall Falcons (4-2, 3-1), in search of their first conference title since 2000, were unable to secure at least a share of the crown when they lost at Brown Deer, 34-13. With one Woodland East Division game remaining, the Falcons are now tied for first with Brown Deer and South Milwaukee. Greenfield, meanwhile, in need of two wins in its final three games in order to qualify for the WIAA postseason, suffered a 14-7 loss to South Milwaukee on Friday. That leaves the Hawks (2-4, 2-2) desperate for victories against both Brown Deer next Friday and Wauwatosa West on Oct. 12.

Bits of knowledge

2:12 pm on Saturday, September 29, 2012

I thought it was a well played game. 14-7 means hard hitting took place and the teams were disciplined, well coached. I can remember when greenfield was getting 40 to 50 points hung on them every week. They ran the spread at the time and did not score many points. It doesn't matter what offense you run. It comes down to execution. I respect a coach and kids who go out day in and day out and …   more ›
