Rose Bowl 2013: Local Wisconsin Badgers to Watch

As the Wisconsin Badgers take the field on Tuesday, there are plenty of Milwaukee County residents to root for in the game vs. Stanford.

For Milwaukee County residents, the Rose Bowl is more than just a long-standing tradition of New Year’s Day football. With several local residents playing for the Wisconsin Badgers, there’s plenty to cheer for this year. Joel Stave, a redshirt freshman from Whitnall High School in Greenfield, started six games at quarterback this season before suffering a broken collarbone. He completed 70 of 118 passes for 1,104 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Stave has been cleared to play in the Rose Bowl but Curt Phillips will start, according to SBNation.com. He was named Academic All-Big Ten.  Rick Wagner, a redshirt senior from West Allis Hale, will be asked to protect whoever is playing quarterback. He started 11 games at left tackle…

Where to Apply to Coach the Wisconsin Badgers

The job is posted, as any other at a public university. But it's unlikely you will be picked by Barry Alvarez to replace Bret Bielema as the school's football coach. Who will be?

Do you think all those years you’ve spent as an unpaid assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers football qualify you to replace Bret Bielema as the Badgers’ new head coach? You have to apply by Dec. 19. Make sure you have at least three professional references. It won’t happen in time to lead the team through the tunnel at the Rose Bowl — that job belongs to former coach Barry Alvarez — and is unlikely to happen at all for most of us. Who might Alvarez actually choose, after Bielema surprised almost everyone in the state by accepting the head coaching job at Arkansas? Madison radio station Big 1070 reported last week that Chris Petersen of Boise State will interview for the job Monday. Soon after, a Sporting News …

What Badger Fans Thought of Joel Stave's First Start

Former Whitnall Quarterback Joel Stave Listed as Badgers Co-Starter

The Wisconsin Badgers most recent depth chart lists Stave, a freshman, along with Danny O'Brien.

Whitnall football fans who remember Joel Stave and his rocket right arm leading the Falcons up and down the field in 2009 and 2010 might be able to relive those moments Saturday. Only this time, Stave will be wearing the red and white of the Wisconsin Badgers. Numerous news outlets reported Monday that Stave, a redshirt freshman, was listed as a co-starter at quarterback, along with Danny O'Brien, on the Badgers' official depth chart five days in advance of Wisconsin's nonconference match-up with Texas-El Paso. Stave completed 2 of 6 passes for 15 yards in relief of O'Brien in the second half of the Badgers 16-14 win over Utah State on Saturday. Afterward, he said he wasn't worried about who'd start the next game. Head coach Bret Bielema …

Packers Prevent Ugly Week from Getting Uglier

Had it not been for Green Bay's win in Minnesota, a lot of Wisconsin sports fans would be out on a ledge this morning.

A big thank-you goes out to the Green Bay Packers for preventing the last “week” from being arguably the most disastrous in Wisconsin sports history. Had it not been for them coming back and then holding on to beat the lousy Minnesota Vikings, Wisconsinites would have to chew on a series of heartbreaking defeats. The bad stretch started last Sunday when the Milwaukee Brewers were knocked out of the playoffs by the hated St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park. Then came Saturday’s unforgettable Wisconsin Badgers-Michigan State Spartans college football showdown that probably cost Bucky a shot at the national championship. And let’s not forget to mention the Milwaukee Bucks, who, er, never mind the NBA. No one — even the players and owners — …

Wisconsin's 2011 Sports Success: Deserved Payoff, or Foreboding?

It's been a great run, but will a cleated shoe soon fall?

You can tell a Wisconsin sports fan by the change that's taken place over the last nine months. He smiles a lot. Refuses to change habits (or clothes). Hugs strangers. Reacts to fixing a leaky faucet by either a) giving himself a championship belt, or b) going into "Beast Mode." The last month has seen the bandwagon only pick up speed. The Brewers captured the division, the National League Division Series and Game 1 of the NL Championshp Series. The Packers won a Super Bowl in February, the sixth of an 11-game win streak that continued Sunday night. The Wisconsin Badgers football team is also unbeaten and a contender for the national title. And oh, yes, the Milwaukee Wave won their fifth league championship back in the spring and the …

Patch Gets Love From TV's 'Turtle'

Actor Jerry Ferrara of the hit HBO show "Entourage" donned a Patch shirt while in Madison for ESPN's GameDay on Saturday.

You just can’t buy the kind of publicity Patch received Saturday. Jerry Ferrara, who portrays the character "Turtle" on the hit HBO show “Entourage,” donned the same type of green t-shirts us non-Hollywood-but-extremely-Patchy types wear. From what I hear, Ferrara heard about Patch through mutual friends who are big fans and supporters. He keeps tabs on his hometown, Brooklyn, NY, via the Patch there, and is also a big fan of the Livingston, NJ, site whenever he's in town. On Saturday, Ferrara, a huge college football fan, was a guest of ESPN’s College GameDay, which set up shop in Madison in anticipation of the Wisconsin-Nebraska Big Ten showdown. Ferrara, who correctly picked the Badgers as the winner, did so while rockin’ a Patch t-…

Former Whitnall Quarterback Currently Third on Badgers Depth Chart

His talent and another's injury have elevated him, but the team's preference is to have Joel Stave redshirt this fall.

According to multiple sources, the Wisconsin Badgers football coaching staff would prefer that former Whitnall quarterback Joel Stave redshirt this fall and maintain four years of eligibility while honing his skills. But according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Badger blog, Stave will likely enter Wisconsin's season-opener with Nevada-Las Vegas on Thursday in Madison as the team's third-string quarterback behind starter Russell Wilson and redshirt freshman Joe Brennan. Stave, presumably, would only play in an emergency in order for the Badgers to preserve his redshirt status. Stave was elevated to third on the depth chart thanks to redshirt sophomore Jon Budmayr's right hand injury, according to the blog post. A recent story on …

Most Highway Construction Will Cease Over Labor Day Weekend

But traffic will still be heavy all over the state. Thursday will be a particularly busy day with home Brewers, Badgers and Packers games slated in Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay.

During the Labor Day weekend, workers will take a break from construction on most highway projects around the state, but motorists may still encounter lane restrictions in work zones that require extra precautions, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) officials. WisDOT announced today in a news release that most major highway construction and repair work will cease around noon Friday, Sept. 2, and will not resume until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. "However, because of the increased holiday traffic, driving through work zones will be even more challenging," said Don Greuel of the WisDOT Project Service Section. "Drivers will need to slow down, pay attention and avoid following other vehicles too closely when approaching …
