New GHS Wrestling Coach Wants to Build on Tradition

Chris Otto is in his first season as the Greenfield High School wrestling coach, one of two new local varsity head coaches this winter.

Chris Otto is familiar with wrestling tradition. He wrestled from 1991-95 at West Allis Central, a school rich in wrestling history, and returned to be a varsity assistant coach from 2001-07, helping guide two individuals to state championships and another to a state runner-up effort while the Bulldogs were firmly established as the team to beat in the Greater Metro Conference. He’s also aware of the tradition built at Greenfield, where Otto is now in his first year as head coach of the Hustlin’ Hawks’ varsity wrestling program. “I want to put my own identity on it, but make sure there is a good mesh with what was established here.,” Otto said. “Why fix it if it’s not broken?” After last year, some could say the program is damaged, if not …

Video: Greenfield Football Team Riding Momentum of 2011

Last fall, the Hustlin' Hawks made the WIAA postseason for the first time since 2002. Now, coach Scott Otto and his players want to win the school's first league title in more than three decades.

The Greenfield football team snapped one of the longest playoff droughts in the Patch area last fall when they went 5-5 and competed in the WIAA postseason for the first time since 2002. That playoff appearance has energized the program, according to third-year coach Scott Otto, who said one of the program’s main goals now is to win a conference title for the first time in more than 30 years. If the Hawks accomplish that goal, they’ll be doing it while grouped with Whitnall, Cudahy, St. Francis, Brown Deer and South Milwaukee in one division of the Woodland Conference, a league that added Milwaukee Pius and said good-bye to St. Thomas More during the offseason. All games 7 p.m. Aug. 17: at Mukwonago (Scrimmage - 6 p.m.) Aug. 24: vs. …

Video: Whitnall Football Team Excited About New Beginnings

New coach Jeff Wallack has been in place since April, and the high school's new football stadium will be open in September.

The Whitnall football team had its three-year playoff run snapped last fall when it managed only three wins in nine tries. Jeff Wallack replaced Rob Leboeuf as head coach of the program in April. The ex-Milwaukee Hamilton coach went 31-27 in his six seasons in the City Conference. The former Germantown High School hopes to introduce a strong work ethic to the program and turn Whitnall into a perennial conference and playoff contender. The Falcons have a strong senior class, and there is quite a bit of buzz in the community surrounding the opening of the new high school football stadium. Patch caught up with Coach Wallack during the Falcons first official week of summer training camp and talked to him about his expectations for 2012. All …

Greenfield, Whitnall Could Form Joint Boys Volleyball Program

The districts are considering a co-op, and the Greenfield School Board will hear its administration's proposal Monday.

The Greenfield School Board will consider approving an arrangement between Greenfield and Whitnall high schools that would result in a cooperative boys volleyball team at its meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. Whitnall is the only school in the Woodland Black Division that does not offer boys volleyball. South Milwaukee, Greendale and Greenfield have their own teams, while New Berlin Eisenhower has a co-op with New Berlin West. In the Woodland Blue Division, in addition to New Berlin West's co-op, Shorewood has its own team, but St. Thomas More, Cudahy, Pewaukee, Brown Deer and St. Francis do not have teams nor do they participate in co-ops. Greenfield High School was winless in the Woodland Conference (0-9) last fall but has made two WIAA state …

Can Hawks, Falcons Make it Two Straight?

Both the Greenfield and Whitnall football teams will try to remain perfect in the Woodland Conference Friday night.

After season-opening nonconference losses, both the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks and Whitnall Falcons football teams opened the Woodland Conference season with victories last Friday. Tonight, both squads will try to keep that perfect league record intact. The Hawks, who handed the Pewaukee Pirates a rare league loss last week, will be taking on the defending Woodland Conference Blue Division champion Brown Deer Falcons at 7 p.m. on the road. Freelance photographer Matt Schwenke will be there to shoot a photo gallery that will be posted on Greenfield Patch either Friday evening or early Saturday morning. Brown Deer (0-2, 0-1), like every other Blue Division team, lost its league opener against its Black Division opponent. Brown Deer lost, 19-…

Hawks Defeat New Berlin West for First Time in Seven Years

Greenfield baseball team improves to 4-1 in the Woodland Conference.

A five-run fourth inning helped the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks baseball team accomplish something it hadn't done since 2004: beat New Berlin West. Tyler Braden pitched 3 2/3 innings of solid relief as Greenfield posted a 12-6 win over the 2010 WIAA State Tournament qualifying-Vikings in New Berlin on Thursday. "We haven't had much success against New Berlin West," Greenfield coach Lee Kleszczynski said. "There have been many close, heartbreaking games against them. "Our bats really came out (Thursday). We were comfortable at the plate. All our players took a great approach at the plate. We swung at pitches we could hit hard and were patient when we needed to be." In the fourth, Evan Greco led off with a single, stole second and scored on …

Whitnall Softball Team Takes a Shot at First Place This Afternoon

The Falcons are one game behind New Berlin Eisenhower, which visits at 4:15 p.m.

With just a few short weeks remaining in the regular season, the Whitnall softball team finds itself in an envious position. The Falcons (9-2) host New Berlin Eisenhower (10-1) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon with a share of first place on the line. “It is always exciting to be in position to play for first place for your conference and I am proud of the way our team has played to be in this position,” Whitnall coach Gary Caliva said. The Falcons put themselves in the thick of the Woodland Conference title hunt when they defeated crosstown rival Greenfield, 1-0, at home May 6, as reported by John Rech of NOW Newspapers. The Falcons followed that victory with a narrow, 5-4 win over Greendale four days later, but the win over perennial …

High School Sports Preview: Falcons to Meet Lions in First-Place Showdown

Whitnall boys basketball team looks to hold onto its one-game lead in the Woodland Black Division.

In perhaps the biggest game of the Woodland Conference boys basketball season so far, the Whitnall Falcons will host the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions at 7:30 p.m. tonight with a share of first place on the line. The Falcons own the top spot in the Woodland Black Division with an 8-1 league record (9-4 overall), one game ahead of both Eisenhower (9-4 overall, 7-2) and South Milwaukee (9-3, 7-2). The Falcons, who are undefeated at home (4-0), are winners of their last five games overall and their last six league games. Last winter, Whitnall ended Eisenhower’s 20-game winning streak with a 55-50 loss Feb. 19, the Lions’ only league defeat of the 2009-10 campaign. Eisenhower’s balanced offensive attack includes three players who score in double…
