End of the World in 2012? Not Happening, Scientists Say

NASA and the Vatican are among those who say the end of the Mayan calendar's "long cycle" on Dec. 21, 2012 does not mean the end of the world.

If you’re looking for reassurance the end of the world is not imminent on Dec. 21, start with NASA and the Vatican. There is agreement that a 5,125-year cycle of the Mayan calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012. Some have interpreted this to mean that when the cycle ends, so does mankind. I don't know what to think of all of this, except that it is more than mildly interesting that so many different cultures and beliefs are pointing to this date. It also begs the question (and come on, you've thought it too) what IS going to happen one year from now? My thoughts of what a cataclysmic end to the world spans the trivial to the morose. On one hand, I will finally be debt-free because civilization will cease …

Amen, St. Swithin. However you do realize (given what happened in late 1999) that there will be those who will be building the bunkers, and plenty who will want to cash in on it. We certainly won't be lacking in news stories.   more ›
