Downed Trees, Flooding at City Hall Reported After Storm

A quick afternoon thunderstorm produced high winds that knocked down as many as 15 trees that needed to be cleared from city streets Monday.

An afternoon thunderstorm that brought with it plenty of wind, rain and hail hung around Greenfield just long enough to be a nuisance. Just how much of a nuisance remains to be seen. According to Division of Public Works Superintendent Dan Ewert, four, two-person crews were called in to clear at least 15 trees from city streets after the storm. In addition, Ewert reported flooding in the basement of City Hall. The extent of the damage was not known as of 10:30 p.m. Monday. Greenfield police responded to more than a dozen calls for downed trees, some of which were blocking roads; more than 10 building alarm calls; and 15 calls about flooding, according to Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt. Just when cool summer nights offered some proof that the season was ready to transition into chilly fall days — another near record-breaking temperature is expected for Thursday. The record high for this date in Milwaukee is 96. Greenfield is expected to actually hit that mark, according to the National Weather Service. Humidity levels are expected to be low throughout the afternoon, the weather service said, which lowers the heat's "deadly afftects."  On Friday, Greenfield has an expected high of 89. Children or pets should not be left in vehicles in such extreme temperatures. The elderly must take extra precautions in the hot weather.

Nice video Dave...I saw it for myself last night, but buried my head under the sheets since I still dislike lightning and thunder. Won't ever outgrow that I suppose. Much better to watch the video than the real thing.   more ›
